Netflix viewers are divided after the blockbuster thriller series Black Doves was confirmed to be returning for a second season.

The six-part spy thriller written by Joe Barton (Giri/Haji, The Lazarus Project) was released earlier this month.

Set in London, the series follows Helen Webb (Keira Knightley), a quick-witted, down-to-earth, dedicated wife and mother who is also a professional spy.

But after a decade of passing on her politician husband’s secrets to the shadowy organisation she works for – the Black Doves – Helen’s secret lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated and her spymaster Reed (Sarah Lancashire), calls in Helen’s old friend Sam (Ben Whishaw), an assassin, to keep her safe.

The pair then set out to investigate the murder but uncover a ‘vast, interconnected conspiracy linking the murky London underworld to a looming geopolitical crisis’.

It holds a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes however reviews from fans were mixed.

‘Well-acted action-filled thriller with a few twists that even seasoned viewers might not see coming,’ Dani posted.

‘This grabbed my attention immediately. I ended up binging on it over two days. Great storyline and acting. Obviously held my attention,’ Mike shared.

‘A narrative and plot so full of holes I couldn’t even start to enjoy the pretty good acting. Absolute mess,’ Alexander wrote.

‘I’m baffled by the high ratings from critics. I watched the first episode and couldn’t stop rolling my eyes in disbelief at the corny dialog, cheesy characters, and ridiculous plot line. This is bottom of the barrel TV,’ Domenica added.

This week it was announced the show had been greenlit for another season.

The news was announced on social media, with a video showing Keira and Ben sitting at a bar before making a toast to the next season before each unwrapping a bullet, holding them up while smirking and then dropping them into their champagne flutes.

‘Black Doves Season 2 is coming, darlings,’ the caption read.

However, the update sparked very different reactions.

‘Why? There was nothing special about the first one,’ Amara commented.

‘Please don’t,’ aayu quipped.

‘I felt there was unfinished business. Glad it’s coming back,’ Louis posted.

‘Great acting, and intriguing build up, but ultimately disappointingly mediocre. Nonetheless I’ll watch a second season,’ Jonathan added.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Barton spoke about the upcoming second season.

‘Literally, I’m in the writers’ room right now. We have just finished a meeting. We’re figuring it all out and putting it all down on paper. But yeah, we’re going to be filming next year, so hopefully, it won’t be too long a wait between series for people. That’s where we’re at,’ he said.

Black Doves is streaming on Netflix.
