Netflix viewers have declared ‘Christmas has come early’ as new episodes of a beloved romantic comedy are released.

First released in 2019, Virgin River is based on the series of novels by Robyn Carr.

It follows midwife Melinda ‘Mel’ Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) who moves to the remote Northern Californian town of Virgin River to ‘start fresh and leave painful memories behind’.

However, she quickly discovers it’s not as easy as she believed and instead comes up against the challenges of small-town life.

The series quickly picked up a loyal following, with the series holding an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

After watching the first season, many viewers posted their thoughts on it, with lots comparing it to a sweet Hallmark production.

‘It’s so nice to look on Netflix and find a true romantic series to watch. I thought it might be on the cheesier side…but that’s not what I found here,’ one posted.

‘Love small town romance dramas and this one is up there,’ someone else shared.

‘I’ve been waiting for this show since I first read the books. It’s a show you can finish in a day and lose track of time with its so good. Most shows don’t live up to their original novels to me especially with the adaptations for the screen but there is no question this one does!’ another added.

Since then, five more seasons have been released, with the 10-episode sixth season dropping this week.

Many have already raced through all the episodes too.

‘Not me staying up until all hours to binge Virgin River S6 that I have been waiting to watch for 12 months and now it’s done,’ Cath admitted on X.

However the series has also had its detractors, with some calling it ‘formulaic’, ‘cliché’ and ‘pointless’.

The show’s writer and producer Richard Keith spoke to Netflix’s Tudum two years ago about the rollercoaster storylines the characters are presented with.

‘Yes, the characters do go through some pretty terrible things, but there’s always a happy ending. It may not be the happy ending they were expecting, but they find their way to a happy place that, in some ways, might be happier than if they’d ended up where they thought they would to begin with,’ he said.

Virgin River is streaming on Netflix.
