The Traitors presenter Claudia Winkleman has revealed her confidential communication with a co-star ahead of the BBC show’s return on New Year’s Day.

The Strictly Come Dancing host, 52, has helmed the reality TV show since it premiered in the UK in 2022 and will be back for the much anticipated third season.

Such has been Traitors’ success, a UK celebrity spin-off is in the works, while the format has travelled across the world, including America, where it is presented by Alan Cumming.

The US Traitors is also filmed in the same Scottish Highlands castle as the UK programme – and Claudia reveal she leaves Alan, 59, secret notes in between filming.

She told the Sunday Times: ‘Alan and I leave notes for each other, but I can’t watch the American one, and Alan can’t watch me, because we are both so territorial.

‘I just didn’t understand why he was in my castle and he feels the same. ‘What’s that orange woman doing in my castle with my owl?’

After two seasons, viewers would be forgiven for thinking they’ve seen it all, from Diane’s famous Ross reveal to the usual brutal, backstabbing treachery, but producers are keeping everyone on their toes.

‘Like any good murder mystery, the plot is always full of twists and turns,’ Claudia previously teased.

‘There’s one twist this year which will hopefully have viewers on the edge of their seat.’

Claudia added: ‘I would love to tell you all about series three, but then I will get fired so I can tell you absolutely nothing. What I will tell you is that things are different this year.

‘There are some really exciting things that have changed, which keeps everyone on the toes and feeds into the central premise of trust! I can’t wait for everyone to see.’

However, she did reveal the missions had been overhauled for season 3 – and said they would have more of an impact on the game.

‘The missions in series three are really, really exciting. I love the missions and I really hope that people love them,’ Claudia explained.

‘They keep getting bigger and better, and this year have more stakes in the bigger picture of the game than ever before.’

The first season of The Traitors was won jointly by Faithfuls Aaron Evans, Hannah Byczkowski and Meryl Williams, with Traitor Wilf Webster missing out on the jackpot at the final hurdle.

The second season was won by Traitor Harry Clark, who managed to deceive his friend Mollie Pearce – who was a Faithful – right up until the final moments of the competition.

The Traitors, which is based on a Dutch format called De Verraders, involves Claudia selecting a small number of players to be the traitors, while the rest of the players are the faithfuls and are unaware of the identity of the traitors.

While trying to avoid being eliminated, the faithfuls must figure out who is a traitor and vote them out so they can take the prize money for themselves.

The UK version of the show has won a host of awards including at the Bafta TV Awards in 2023 for best reality and constructed factual show.

The Traitors starts New Years Day at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
