After a hard-fought battle for the Christmas Number One title, Tom Grennan could still secure chart success.

The Not Over Yet singer lost out to Wham! who scored a record-breaking win with Last Christmas landing the coveted chart position two years in a row.

Determined Tom even got a tattoo in hopes he would beat the 40-year-old festive favourite to that top spot; he ended up at number four.

However, not all hope is lost as it appears the 29-year-old is on track to get his first-ever number one single this week instead.

It Can’t Be Christmas has shot past Wham and with just 500 sales in it, he is poised to claim the top spot on Friday, according to Official Charts.

In a teasing Instagram post, Official Chart wrote: ‘Last week’s Christmas Number 1 champs @whamofficial are hot on Tom’s heels with Last Christmas, and you can never rule out the Queen of Christmas @mariahcarey!’

It added that Kelly Clarkson’s Underneath The Tree has proved popular this year and is ‘set to hit an all-time high’, climbing into the top 10.

Next week is looking incredibly festive as this week’s number two, Gracie Abrams, drops out of the top five and Mariah Carey holds on to third.

Another Amazon Original sits happily in fourth; Christmas Magic by Laufey, which climbed 15 chart positions after her appearance on Graham Norton.

Christmas classic Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee is sitting securely at number five, 60 years after it’s original release.

Jingle Bell Rock, Fairytale of New York, and Santa Tell Me round out the early top 10, making for a very festive chart set to be announced on December 27.

Tom hasn’t given an update on his tattoo situation after the Remind Me singer got ‘Christmas no.1 2024 is…’ on his thigh with a blank space ready for the winner’s name to be added after the announcement.

Speaking about the race for number one, Tom said: ‘Today I’m at the tattoo shop and I thought I’m gonna make it interesting. I’m gonna get “ChristmasNo.1 2024 is…” and I’m gonna let you lot decide what goes on my leg.’

He asked fans not to ‘let this flop’ and it seems as Christmas finally arrives, his determination is paying off.

The Official Chart will be announced on Friday, December 27, during Jack Saunders show on Radio 1.
