*WARNING: Spoilers for Dune Prophecy below*

Dune: Prophecy has been compared to Game of Thrones after fans hailed the season one finale as an ‘insane’ bloodbath.

The series, starring Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Mark Strong, Tabu and Travis Fimmel, premiered earlier this year on HBO Max in the US, and Sky Atlantic and Now in the UK.

It serves as a prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s movies, and takes place 10,000 before ‘the ascension of Paul Atreides’, following ‘two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit’.

The final episode aired in the US last night, leaving viewers well and truly stunned as not everyone made it out alive and safely into the newly announced second season.

In fact, Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark) died in devastating scenes, while his mistress, Sister Francesca (Tabu) fell at the hands of Empress Natalya (Jodhi May) – leaving questions over what the upcoming series could have in store.

Those watching from home couldn’t get enough of the bombshell finale, and flocked to Twitter to unpack the episode.

Virgo Blade wrote: ‘These girls are wild. This was a bloodbath… #DuneProphecy.’

‘That #DuneProphecy finale was absolutely insaneeee! What a show, 10/10 recommend,’ Crissyg91 said.

‘I expected House of the Dragon to bring back the Game of Thrones type of tension, but #DuneProphecy was the one to do it,’ Leo wrote. ‘Monarchy drama is officially BACK.’

Sharing their own Game of Thrones comparison before the finale, Isaac__88 posted: ‘#DuneProphecy is basically Game of Thrones in space and I love it.’

Diego praised: ‘Dune Prophecy is proof that a good script and great actors can raise the level of production.

‘I hope other shows will leave aside the fireworks show and focus more on the script and acting like Dune Prophecy. Great final season! #DuneProphecy.’

As Christine Galea added: ‘That finale was insane! I don’t know how many times I said omg #DuneProphecy.’

Sadly Mark Strong’s character will not be returning (Picture: HBO Max)

While it’s not clear exactly what we can expect from a second season, showrunner Alison Schapker confirmed that Emperor Javicco would not be making a surprise return.

‘We love him, and we’re very sad about it,’ she said in a press conference. ‘Mark Strong was a joy to work with, just a tremendous actor and a tremendous human being.

‘I think his characterization of this particular Emperor was brilliant. It was such a pleasure to watch him trace his arc across the season. But yes, I think it’s safe to say that he’s dead.

‘But he will be missed, and he leaves a big power vacuum.’

Is that a power vacuum that Emily’s Reverend Mother Valya Harkonnen could exploit? Time will tell…

Dune Prophecy is available to stream on HBO Max and Sky Atlantic now.
