The stars of Gavin and Stacey have left us all sobbing with an emotional reunion ahead of the last ever episode.

James Corden and Ruth Jones announced in May that the beloved BBC programme, starring Joanna Page as Stacey and Mathew Horne as Gavin, would be returning for one final Christmas special.

The show originally ran from 2007 to 2010, before coming back for a festive episode in 2019, with a cliffhanger leaving us begging to know what happened after Nessa (Ruth) proposed to Smithy (James).

Though plot details and spoilers have been kept tightly under wraps, we do know it’s set to be a very emotional ride, but the tears have already started streaming.

The cast reunited for a BBC Radio 2 takeover, with singalongs, Rob Brydon reading the travel news in the style of Uncle Bryn, James dropped recipes, and answering messages from fans.

They were joined by Pam and Mick actors Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb, and Robert Wilfort, who plays Stacey’s brother Jason, though Gwen actress Melanie Walters didn’t appear to be present.

As the radio show wrapped up, the stars celebrated being together for one last time, and were left wiping back tears and sharing hugs.

A clip shared on social media saw Alison comforting James as he hugged her, while Mathew and Joanna held hands on the sofa, holding back tears.

Alison was also seen weeping, while James appeared to mouth ‘love you’ to Larry as he stood up for a hug.

Towards the end of the short video, which was taken while the final song of their radio show played – Run by Stephen Fratwell, the iconic ‘wait by the window’ Gavin and Stacey song – Mathew wiped back tears as Ruth and James swayed in a long hug.

Viewers were sobbing in the comments on Instagram, with @xxsarajxx saying: ‘I did cry as soon as this intro started today…. This was such a fun and beautifully done show!! Loved it!!! I’ll be crying again Xmas day I’m sure ! Xx.’

‘To quote Pam Shipman Christmas special 2008 I’ve gone…I’ve actually gone!’ an account named @ruth_corden wrote.

@yourfuturefit wrote: ‘Can’t wait for this special but also so sad knowing it’s the last. Really praying it’s a happy ending.’

‘One of the best shows to have been made. I knew as soon as that song ended the breakfast show today they’re would be tears,’ @lewis.howland05 added.

@kellymw84 also said: ‘so emotional listening but seeing this is a perfect ending. Thank you all for the memories.’

This comes after James was left fighting back tears on The Graham Norton Show as he spoke about the ‘special day’ filming the ‘very last line’.

‘It was a very, very special day. We really kind of scheduled the show so that the very last line that we’ll ever hear in the episode is the last thing we shot,’ he said.

‘Which anyone will tell you is so rare that you ever do. Normally, your last day, you’re out on a motorway on your own in a car, and people go, “Well done,” and you go, “Bye then.’

He added: ‘But we really felt like we wanted everybody to be there at the very, very end, and it was just a lot of tears.’

The actor also spoke about what it was like being on set again, telling Graham it was particularly emotional for Joanna, who cried ‘basically every day’.

It comes after BBC recently gave fans an idea of what would unfold, teasing: ‘In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex.

‘Soon enough, Gavin, Stacey, and the rest of their family and friends are seen in high spirits with another get-together at Pam and Mick’s house.

‘This time it looks like Bryn will be giving limbo a go. Clearly, Pam and Mick are playing host this time around, but why are they partying?’

Gavin and Stacey: The Finale will air at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One and iPlayer. The documentary Gavin and Stacey: A Fond Farewell will be shown at 7pm on New Year’s Day on BBC One and Player.
