A top horror movie with a stellar 90% Rotten Tomatoes score is finally coming to Netflix, six years after its release.
Hereditary grossed $82.8million (£67m) at the box office, with Toni Collette’s portrayal of Annie Graham being hailed as ‘the performance of her career’.
In the years since, the psychological horror has acquired top ratings on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes from more than 375 different critics’ reviews.
Viewers have also flooded it with praise, describing it as ‘immaculate’ and ‘one of my favourite horror movies of all time.’
But if you’re late to the hype, never fear, because you’ll be able to see what all the fuss is about in the New Year.
Directed by Ari Aster, Hereditary is set to land on the streamer on January 15, 2025, just shy of the sixth anniversary of its world premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

Hereditary was previously available on Prime Video and Max, but it’s now set to enter the living rooms of a whole new host of cinephiles.
So, what’s the plot, and just how scary is it?
With Oscar-nominee Collette taking the lead, Hereditary tells the story of Annie who, after the death of her mother, descends into grief.
However, it isn’t long until peculiar things start happening as the family is tormented by the unravelling of terrifying secrets.
As occurrences become more disturbing, and murky questions arise, the horrifying truth of Annie’s ancestry is revealed.
We’re saying no more because you don’t want spoilers for this…
What we can share, though, are the reviews, with critics convinced that this is one of the most petrifying horrors of recent times— if you’re a horror fiend, surely that’s perfect bait?
Writing on Rotten Tomatoes, Roxana Hadadi says: ‘Toni Collette delivers a soul-shattering performance in Hereditary that reminds us how much sacrifice parenthood is and how deeply parents can scar their children, utterly beyond repair.’
Andrea Gronvall declares Collette’s performance ‘flawless,’ while Richard Roeper Collette praises: ‘Collette deserves best actress consideration for playing another mother trapped in another inexplicable, spine-tingling situation.’
Larushka Ivan-Zadeh writes that the film is ‘utterly terrifying – but in a way you can’t quite put your finger on. Which means you will never, ever shake it off.’
‘This is serious, glorious, edge-of-your-seat horror,’ adds Hannah Strong.
Karen Han’s review is perhaps one of the most chilling, as she says: ‘Hereditary is a movie to be watched from between your fingers, and to be carried home as a feeling of unease under your skin.’
Critics have also praised the film’s final twist, which will inevitably cause jaws to drop to the floor.
Speaking previously about her experience making Hereditary, Collette said she ‘loved’ sinking her teeth into the role, also revealing what the ‘scariest’ aspect was.

‘Ultimately, it’s about a woman having an awakening of sorts after living a life of having a really distant, destructive, unnurturing relationship with her mother.
‘More often than not, we associate an awakening with a positive, revelatory gap.
‘In this film, it’s the idea of no hope and no escape. That’s the scariest thing about it.’
Watch Hereditary on Netflix from January 15.
