Although many Gavin and Stacey fans were left in tears during the ‘perfect’ finale, Southampton residents have called out a ‘mistake’ they couldn’t miss.
The final episode of the BBC comedy series aired on Christmas Day, with viewers experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions after Smithy (James Corden) finally declared his love for Nessa (Ruth Jones) after her failed proposal five years earlier.
But their happy ending very nearly didn’t happen after he had to race to Southampton to stop her from boarding a cargo ship to spend six months away in Curacao.
Although things did work out for them, some viewers couldn’t help but notice a glaring issue.
Soon after tuning in, many took to social media to point out it was obvious the scenes set at the docks were not filmed in the port city.
‘Gavin and Stacey really tryna gaslight me into thinking that’s Southampton docks. I know my city smh,’ Jodie posted on X.

‘Gavin and Stacey was worth the wait, a perfectly written, performed story that fittingly ends the show, and was emotional, funny and surprising. The call backs and returning cast have always been a highlight, but this was a perfect ending. (Although that wasn’t Southampton),’ Alex commented.
However, others didn’t seem to mind.
‘I didn’t give a toss as it was soooo perfect!’ Bethany shared.
‘I knew it wasn’t the real Southampton docks, but I don’t care!’ Hannah added.

The scenes set in Southampton were also instead filmed 100 miles away at Newport Docks in Wales.
Despite this small detail, it didn’t seem to actually deter anyone from watching.
In fact, the episode was the most watched TV episode across all channels in over a decade, with 12.3 million people tuning in.
The Gavin and Stacey finale beat its own record set five years ago after its 2019 Christmas special attracted 11.6 million viewers.
Gavin and Stacey is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
