Gavin and Stacey star Laura Aikman, 39, stole the show as Sonia in the long-awaited finale – and fans are concerned.
The beloved BBC comedy finally returned five years after leaving us on the agonising cliff-hanger when Nessa (Ruth Jones) proposed to Smithy (James Corden) after he’d rowed with girlfriend Sonia.
It was soon revealed moments into the last ever episode which aired on Christmas day that Smithy was getting married – but not to Nessa.
Instead, Ness recalled Gavin interrupting the proposal and Smithy walking away speechless. Ness told Stacey she woke up the next day to discover Smithy was engaged – to Sonia.
Five years later, Sonia and Smithy were finally walking down the aisle, much to the dismay of all their loved ones – particularly Nessa, who couldn’t face the big day.

Instead, she packed her bags for a new life out at sea while Smithy looked destined to make the biggest mistake of his life.
Fans were crushed not to see Smithy and Nessa’s love story get its happy ending – until Gavin (Mathew Horne) plucked up the courage mid-ceremony to admit no one thought this marriage should go ahead.
One by one, Smithy’s favourite people in the world stood up in agreement, Smithy came to his senses and jilted Sonia at the aisle.
Gavin and Stacey concluded with Smithy and Ness having their big day in Gavin’s living room and going to the pub, the day they deserved.
The 90-minute special which Metro awarded five stars, was a tense watch though, with Sonia becoming more unbearable during the five-year break.

Fans have praised Laura for her ‘excellent’ performance as the only unlikeable character in the most lovable show imaginable.
Some have gone as far as saying they’re concerned for Laura, who played Sonia’s toxicity so well they fear she’s going to be hit with backlash from fans who can’t seem to separate the actor from the character.
On a Reddit thread praising Laura, mary_llynn wrote: ‘I won’t lie to you, I’m kinda worried for the actress, she already got so much hate for her role in 2019 just cause she plays unlikable so well I really hope people leave her be and appreciate a good performance this time around.’
Hassan18 agreed: ‘People are idiots. Not the first time people have given the actor hate because they don’t like the character. Happens with soap actors too.
‘However, hopefully she’ll be okay.’
‘It takes a special talent to make audiences hate you *that* much. She did an excellent job,’ added LolwhatYesme.

Laura was sworn to secrecy over Sonia’s return – so much so she didn’t tell her family.
The sneaky actress shared a video to Instagram of her watching last night’s Gavin and Stacey with her nearest and dearest, who were just a stunned as the rest of us to see Laura back on screen.
‘I take an NDA very seriously,’ she teased in the caption.
Laura even shared a photo on her Instagram Stories from Sonia’s disastrous hen-do with the caption: ‘Apologies for my behaviour.’
At a screening of the Gavin and Stacey finale, Corden explained the great lengths they went to in order to keep Sonia’s role a secret.
He said: ‘I do feel like it’s very, very important to say that Laura puts in as good a performance as you could ever really wish for – and isn’t here today for fear of it still just somehow leaking.
‘She stayed in different hotels, she was going into places in the dead of night [during filming]. She’s not part of any of this [promotion]. Such is her want and our want to try and protect the very feeling that we had here.’
Jones added: ‘She hasn’t even told her mum and dad and she’s hoping to film her parents’ reaction [on Christmas Day]. She hasn’t even said she’s in it, so we hope that she will capture that.’
Gavin and Stacey: The Finale is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
