Fans slate ‘truly abysmal’ new thriller flying up Netflix top 10 chart-Rishma Dosani-Entertainment – Metro
‘Complete and utter rubbish.’
A new thriller is storming up the charts on Netflix, but unimpressed viewers have urged film fans not to ‘waste their time’ with it.
DarkGame was released at the beginning of the year, with Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick leading the cast alongside Rose Reynolds, Andrew P Stephen and Lola Wayne.
The movie follows a sadistic game show streamed live on the dark web, where contestants are executed live if they lose.
A police officer races to save the competitors while the creepy masked game show host does whatever it takes to ensure his ratings go up.
Although the flick has an intriguing premise and is currently in the top 10 most watched films on Netflix in the UK, the online reviews of Howard J Ford’s crime thriller have not been kind.
It currently commands a Rotten Tomatoes score of 31%, with many branding it ‘predictable’ and ‘disturbing’.

User Paul R slated: ‘Complete and utter rubbish. I can’t imagine who might enjoy this. Bad concept, script, acting and sickeningly violent. Is this really what 2024/5 has come to?’
Dan K fumed: ‘I hated this film so much that I just made this account to leave it a review. This was utterly terrible, the showman was so cringe with an over the top American accent that I cringed so hard.
‘The cops were laughable. The fake American setting which was clearly filmed in England was also terrible. The list goes on. I hate myself for sitting through this, Christmas is ruined. Thanks.’
‘The list of things wrong with this film is gargantuan. Poor acting! Scenes of police conferences and journalist hounding could’ve been made by schoolchildren,’ Alex H wrote. ‘Side plots don’t go anywhere.

‘Characters don’t have any personality at all and we don’t know anything about any of them. “The presenter” seemed like someone played the Batman Arkham games and decided to rip off it’s version of the joker. Don’t waste your time [sic].’
Martin P said: ‘Truly abysmal on just about every level..’
‘Unbelievably bad on every level,’ VinylDeals U said, branding it a ’complete waste of time’.
As Hillary W added: ‘Truly one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever watched.’

DarkGame first hit the big screen in February, before arriving on Netflix recently.
The official synopsis reads: ‘A determined detective is in a race against time to stop a twisted game show on the dark web where captives are forced to compete for their lives.’
Director Howard previously shed light on the flick and shared that he initially had second thoughts about jumping on board when he first read the script.

‘I started reading, and I thought there was no way I was going to do this film,’ he told Eye For Film. ‘It’s got a girl who’s going to have her head cut off by a chainsaw on page one.
‘I thought, “This is one of those torture porn movies – why does Tom [George, writer and producer] want to do this?” Then I started getting a few pages in, and I realized it’s actually a cool thriller with a character that has the potential to give it a bit of heart, and it was also kind of noirish.
‘I thought I could make something totally different to the other films I’ve done, and that’s why I jumped in.’
DarkGame is available to stream on Netflix now.
