If you’re not quite ready to bid goodbye to Gavin and Stacey, you’re not the only one—but there’s still reason to hope that we’ll see our favourite characters again one day.
On Christmas Day, a whopping 12.5million people tuned in for the last-ever episode of the beloved BBC comedy, 17 years after it premiered.
Penned by James Corden and Ruth Jones, while the series has amassed a huge following over three series and three festive specials, the creators have already confirmed there shall be no more.
However, execs are keen to strike while the iron is hot and coax whatever future material they can out of the Gavin and Stacey universe.
According to sources, this could include a spin-off with two iconic characters.
An insider told The Sun: ‘It would be madness to close the door on such a hit.’

It is therefore thought that Dawn and Pete, played by Julia Davis and Adrian Scarborough, respectively, could eventually get their own series.
A TV source added: ‘James and Ruth are adamant this is the last of Gavin and Stacey, but, when a programme achieves such results, execs will always hope for more.
‘At the end of the day, ratings talk, and it would be madness to close the door on such a hit forever when fans loved it so much.
‘Bosses have had casual discussions about whether options like a Pete and Dawn spin-off could work.’
On why a spin-off with the forever bickering married couple could work, they added that Dawn and Pete were ‘always more separate from the main group’.
‘A new universe could be developed which didn’t involve any of the core cast, so James and Ruth’s involvement could be a little different.’
Before the 2024 finale, the last time Gavin and Stacey aired was for a Christmas special in 2019, which left viewers on a cliffhanger as they were left to wonder whether Smithy accepted Nessa’s marriage proposal.

‘No one thought James and Ruth would ever return following 2019’s special, so it’s definitely considered a “never say never” situation, and bosses live in hope,’ added the mole on a possible spin-off.
‘Even when news of this Christmas special broke, Ruth denied it publicly, so any plans will always be shrouded in secrecy.’
TV bosses aren’t the only ones hoping for more of Dawn and Pete, as fans of the show have already expressed their need for another fix of their marital dramas and hilarious insults.
Writing on X, _aidanflynn said: ‘Pete & Dawn are underrated characters on Gavin & Stacey, crack me up’.
MilkySteve also declared: ‘I have said it before and I’ll say it again, Dawn & Pete need their own spin-off show’.
‘Can we have a spin off of Dawn and Pete arguing for half an hour every week for six weeks and then make a second series?’, echoed juliefon_.
The final episode began with Dawn and Pete having been divorced for six months, with Pete in a new relationship and experiencing somewhat of a midlife crisis.

But following a drunken hookup at Pam and Mick’s, the divorcees reunited and, to the relief of the nation, ended up back together.
Elsewhere in the finale, after Smithy was initially due to marry Sonia (Laura Aikman), he finally saw the light – with just minutes to spare until the end of the episode, mind you – and hurried to confess his feelings to Nessa before she hopped on a boat to start a new life.
The episode concluded with their wedding, all their close friends and family present as they said ‘I do’ (plus ‘cracking’ and ‘tidy’, of course).
Co-writers and actors James and Ruth watched the episode together on Christmas Day, sharing a selfie on Instagram with the caption: ‘We had to be together to watch tonight. We really hope you enjoy the finale of Gavin and Stacey.’
James added: ‘It has been the greatest privilege making this show over the past 17 years. We’ll see you on BBC One at 9pm. The years go by so fast, let’s hope the next beats the last. Happy Christmas. x’
Thanking viewers for their support afterwards, he declared: ‘It means more than you’ll know.’
