Adrien Brody has spoken about claims he was ‘banned’ from Saturday Night Live for a controversial skit.

The infamous 2003 performance on the American comedy show saw New Yorker Adrien, now 51, introduce rapper Sean Paul with an exaggerated Jamaican accent while wearing a dreadlock wig.

The choice was made as Sean Paul was born in Kingston, Jamaica.

In the 22 years since, Adrien has not appeared on the long-running series, with speculation that the moment is the reason why.

However, Adrien has claimed SNL provided him with the costume and watched the dress rehearsal.

He did add that the producers were ‘agape’ at his flurry of ideas for the show, including the impression.

‘I think Lorne [Michaels, SNL creator] wasn’t happy with me embellishing a bit, but they allowed me to,’ he said. ‘I thought that was a safe space to do that, weirdly.’

When asked by Variety if he was now barred from the show, he said to his knowledge that isn’t true but added: ‘But I also have never been invited back on so I don’t know what to tell you.’

The video has now been virtually removed from the records – it is unavailable to watch on any of SNL’s official channels.

Adrien has reason to celebrate right now –  he just won a Golden Globe for his role in The Brutalist. The movie received a 13-minute standing ovation when it was screened at the Venice Film Festival.

‘This was an incredibly difficult film to make. I’m very emotional today because I’ve been working on it for seven years and it felt urgent every day of the better part of a decade,’ he said at a press conference attended by Metro.

The three and a half hour historical drama from Brady Corbet, spans almost four decades, and follows Brody as Jewish architect László Tóth, who immigrates to the US and starts working for a rich but hot-headed man looking to build a community centre.

While he helps László and his wife reunite while working on his dream brutalist building, there is a fateful incident which changes the course of their lives.

Adrien dedicated the best actor win to his family: ‘You know, this story is really the character’s journey, is very reminiscent of my mother’s and my ancestors’ journey of fleeing war and coming to this great country.’ His mum Sylvia Plachy emigrated to the United States in the ’50s. Along with her parents she fled Budapest during the Hungarian Revolution and moved to New York.

The acceptance speech continued: ‘I owe so much to my mother and my grandparents for their sacrifice, and although I do not know fully how to express all of the challenges that you have faced and experienced, and the many people who have struggled immigrating to this country, I hope that this work stands to lift you up a bit and to give you a voice. I’m so grateful. I will cherish this moment forever.’

Adrien could be on track for his second Oscar, his first was given to him for The Pianist. He is still the youngest person ever to receive the honour. When accepting the Best Actor gong, he kissed Halle Berry who presented him with the award.

At the time Adrien said it was a ‘big, beautiful thank-you’ but in the recent interview, he declined to talk about it and was allegedly ‘dismayed’ at the subject being brought up.

During an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in 2017, Halle, 58, said: ‘That was not planned, I knew nothing about it.

‘I was like, “What the f**k is happening right now?” That is what was going through my mind.

‘I was there the year before and I know the feeling of being out of your body. I just f*****g went with it.’

Adrien is now in a relationship with girlfriend Georgina Chapman. He thanked his partner of seven years in his acceptance speech calling her ‘beautiful and amazing’.
