A new thriller Netflix viewers branded the best movie they’ve seen in the past 12 months has now smashed records on the streaming platform.

Despite all the competition over Christmas, a new streaming film managed to cut through – and to the tune of 149,400,000 views in less than four weeks.

Carry-On follows an airport security officer who races to outsmart a mysterious traveller attempting to slip a dangerous item onto a Christmas Eve flight.

It stars Taron Egerton as TSA agent Ethan, alongside Jason Bateman and Sofia Carson, with plenty of terrifying suspense, airport chases and security showdowns as the stakes grow ever higher.

Carry-On has proven to be such a success that not only has it become one of Netflix’s biggest releases of 2024, reaching the top spot on the streamer’s global top 10 list of English-speaking movies two weeks in a row, but it’s also become one of its most streamed movies of all time.

Carry-On scored 42,000,000 views in its first three days on Netflix, and then a mammoth 55,100,000 views in its second week, making it the biggest openings for a Netflix film this year with a staggering 97,100,000 views.

It promptly added another 34,900,000 before the year was officially through.

In this most recent week analysed, the first of 2025, it raked in another 17,400,000 views, making for 149,400,000 all in all – so far.

It was expected to break into Netflix’s top 10 of all time, but it’s actually gone straight in at number five.

It pushed Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery out of the top 10 after claiming over 70% of that title’s total 136,300,000 views after just 10 days on the streamer.

Netflix’s all-time top 10 lists total view counts over a title’s first 91 days of release only.

Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel is the other inclusion from 2024 there, with 35,300,000 views in its first three days before racking up 50,800,000 views in its second week and 138,000,000 overall.

Other top Netflix films include Don’t Look Up, The Gray Man and the current top performer ever, Red Notice, with 230,900,000.

While Red Notice failed to charm critics, with a rotten 37% score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, Carry-On has bucked that trend with an impressive 86%, despite Netflix original holiday movies rarely scoring very well.

Fans have even been comparing it to Die Hard, insisting that it’s not a Christmas movie, just one set at Christmas.

Viewer @duartengsilva wrote on X: ‘#CarryOn is a fantastic Christmas movie that brought back Die Hard 2 vibes! Taron Egerton shines as an action hero, and I hope this isn’t the last we see of this character. A fantastic performance in a fantastic film!’

@mik_dr0p declared it an ‘edge of the seat thriller’ and advised that ‘one bag of popcorn is not enough’, while @PlantBsdSprtsChek added: ‘#CarryOn on Netflix is a freaking great watch and could be the next #DieHard. By that I mean a movie set during Christmas that’s not a Christmas movie.’

@luqwho promised that the film was a ‘must watch’ and posted: ‘#CarryOn is probably the last movie I’ll see this year before 2024 ends and probably the contender for one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. Rarity to find a #Netflix movie this good.’

‘If you haven’t yet – watch #CarryOn on @Netflix I was sweating bricks/on the edge of my seat watching it. So good!,’ enthused @JessicaOnAirDJ, while @MovielandAU chimed in: ‘New #Netflix movie “Carry On” is not only a contender for Christmas Movie Of The Year, but in general; Best Movie of 2024. For fans of Die Hard, this one is a suspenseful masterpiece! Add Carry-on to your watch list!’

‘#CarryOn surprised me in a major way. The action sequences, acting from Bateman and Egerton, the overall stress of it all makes this by far one of the best Netflix Originals of the year. I just wish that next time they’ll put something of this caliber into a theatre,’ shared @tylerboxd.

Fans are calling it the new Die Hard (Picture: Netflix)

Kingsman star Egerton previously revealed he would ‘be open’ to returning for the right sequel.

During an appearance on US TV show Today, he said: ‘It’s kind of like an extraordinary set of circumstances, so I think it would need a really innovative, creative idea to feel like a worthy idea for a sequel.’

He added that sequels ‘work for Die Hard, so who knows?’

It sounds like Netflix and fans will certainly be clamouring for more!

Carry-On is available to watch exclusively on Netflix now.
