Now that 2025 has officially arrived, entertainment fans can’t wait to find out what the new year has in store in telly land.

There are plenty of exciting TV shows on the horizon – the final season of Stranger Things, the new Daredevil: Born Again reboot, the return of Severance to name a few – and of course, The Last of Us season 2.

Two years ago, viewers were introduced to Pedro Pascal as a smuggler named Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, a girl who appears to be the only person immune to the cordyceps infection that’s ravaged the world and turned millions into monstrous, killing creatures.

Finally, the series that received acclaim around the world is back, with returning characters and several important newcomers too in a tale that takes place five years after the end of season one.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When is The Last of Us season 2 coming out?

The Last of Us season two is due to be released in April this year, although an exact date for the premiere is yet to be announced.

Fans of the video game were left in awe by the TV adaptation (Picture: HBO)

That means that the second season will be coming out more than two years after the first launched in January 2023.

It’s expected that there’ll be seven new episodes in total, two fewer than before.

Who’s in the cast?

Having become one of TV’s most treasured father-daughter duos, Pedro is set to return as Joel, with Bella reprising the role of Ellie.

Other returning cast members include Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Joel’s brother, and Rutina Wesley as Maria, Tommy’s wife.

There are also several newcomers who are going to be introduced, one of the most notable of which is Booksmart’s Kaitlyn Dever as Abby.

As fans of the video game will know, Abby will play a key part in the second season, as she embarks on a revenge mission – but we won’t say any more at this point to avoid mentioning spoilers.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold star Isabel Merced will be making her debut as Dina, a love interest for Ellie, while Beef actor Young Mazino will be introduced as Jesse, Dina’s ex.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Top Gun: Maverick star Danny Ramirez is also joining the series as a soldier named Manny.

Further exciting additions to the cast include Catherine O’Hara, Tati Gabrielle and Jeffrey Wright.

The Last of Us will return on Sky and NOW.
