Netflix viewers can now watch the sequel to a film that was praised by fans as an ‘uplifting underdog tale’.

Released in 2023, Bank of Dave was based on the real-life experiences of Dave Fishwick, a self-made millionaire from Burnley.

It starred Rory Kinnear in the title role and followed Dave’s efforts to set up a community bank to help the town’s local businesses to thrive.

However, he faced an uphill battle, taking on London’s elite financial institutions and competing to secure the first banking licence in more than 150 years.

The original holds a 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where fans have called the movie a ‘superbly cast, feel good film’.

‘A heartwarming, surprisingly entertaining film that was inspirational. The fact that it is a “trueish” story (their words not mine) only made it all the more delightful,’ one shared.

This week the sequel hit screens. Set two years after Dave founded his back, he now ‘takes on the predatory payday lenders bringing misery to his small English town’.

It follows Jessica (Chrissy Metz), an American investigative reporter, and Oliver (Amit Shah), a local Citizen’s Advice counsellor, teaming up with Dave to bring down predatory corporations that are preying on the poor and vulnerable.

Rob Delaney also plays villain Carlo Mancini, the owner of fictional payday lender Quick Dough.

As viewers tune in, they’ve also shared their thoughts on the follow-up, with Cecilia writing on X it was ‘fabulous’.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast recently, Dave spoke about the success of the first film.

‘We were so lucky that the first movie was number one all over the world, it’s Netflix’s fastest commissioned sequel in history and it’s their most successful British independent film of all time,’ he explained.

He also said the movie was a ‘feel-good story that was real and has real purpose’.

After making his fortune establishing what was to become the biggest minibus supplier in Britain, Dave opened Burnley Savings and Loans in 2011 after discovering big banks were no longer willing to lend his customers money following the 2007–2008 financial crisis.

In the years since it’s loaned over £27m to thousands of people and businesses and donates it profits to charity.

Bank of Dave 2: The Lone Ranger is now streaming on Netflix.
