The likes of Assassin’s Creed and Metal Gear Solid are rumoured to be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this year, as multiple sources agree on the rumoured reveal date.

After months of near constant rumours, and increasingly detailed leaks, it sounds like Nintendo is finally getting ready to formally unveil its next generation, Switch 2 console.

We always knew such a reveal would happen within the first few months of 2025 (Nintendo said as much), but only yesterday was an exact date proposed by insider Nate the Hate: Thursday, January 16.

While an often reliable source, Nate the Hate is just one individual. But it seems his claim burst a dam, because a number of other sources have also come forward to confirm the date.

When is the Nintendo Switch 2 going to be announced?

Both VGC and Eurogamer claim that Nate the Hate’s suggestion of a hardware-centric reveal, followed by a software showcase later on, lines up with what they have heard about the company’s Switch 2 plans.

The Verge, meanwhile, adds that Nintendo will announce the reveal the day before, on Wednesday, January 15. So, Nintendo will at least warn everyone in advance rather than drop the reveal out of nowhere.

And while they don’t have any insider knowledge themselves, former Nintendo public relations managers Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang are confident a Switch 2 reveal will happen this week, based on their experiences working for the company.

Nobody so far has offered an exact time for when the reveal will air, so it seems we’ll have to wait until Nintendo itself provides it as part of the announcement.

Nintendo will likely confirm a release date for the console as part of the reveal, although it may hold off on sharing a price until closer to launch.

It’ll be interesting to see what Nintendo has to show for the hardware reveal since so much info has already made its way online, like the magnetic Joy-Cons.

There is that mystery button that no one’s been able to explain yet, so hopefully Nintendo will have an answer for that. Otherwise, some fans may come away disappointed given the claims there won’t be much focus on the games themselves.

What games are coming to Nintendo Switch 2?

Speaking of games, Nate the Hate has already claimed that Xbox titles such as Halo and Microsoft Flight Simulator are coming to Switch 2, but he’s now hinted at additional titles, from other publishers.

In his latest podcast, Nate claimed that Ubisoft will be supporting the Switch 2 with over half a dozen games. Most of these will be ‘late’ ports, including one for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, with 2023’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage expected to arrive as part of the Switch 2’s launch line-up.

A collection of the two Mario + Rabbids games is also apparently being considered, which would make sense since comments by Ubisoft suggested it would bring an updated re-release of the second game, Sparks Of Hope, to Switch 2.

Another purported third party partner is Konami, with Nate suggesting it will bring the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 remake to Switch 2 in 2025. However, he couldn’t confirm if it will be a launch title or not, since the game itself still lacks a release date beyond a vague 2025 window.

As for Square Enix, Nate reiterated his claim that Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will come to Switch 2, adding that the former is aiming for a 2025 launch and the latter will follow in 2026.

Nate also mentioned that he’s not heard anything of Final Fantasy 16 getting a Switch 2 port since Square Enix is prioritising the Final Fantasy 7 games: ‘Those are more iconic games, Cloud is a very iconic character versus Final Fantasy 16, while a good game, just hasn’t really clicked with a lot of people.’

When it comes to first party games from Nintendo themselves, there’s still no reliable rumours. Common theories for potential launch titles include a new Mario Kart, a new 3D Mario, or an enhanced version of The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.

It’s possible Nintendo will offer a glimpse of a new game during the hardware reveal, but it seems proper announcements will be saved for a separate showcase – which Nate believes will arrive in late February or early March.

An enhanced Breath Of The Wild was apparently shown behind closed doors, but it may have just been a tech demo and not a dedicated port (Nintendo)
