We Live in Time, the Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh romantic drama we’ve eagerly been waiting for, is just as heart-wrenching and unmissable as expected.

Critics and fans agree that the movie is a sob fest in the best way, forcing viewers to access the most tender parts of themselves and consider the power of love in their own lives.

In fact, Metro‘s own film critic wrote that she was so moved, ‘tears rolled down my cheeks and reached my neck – and that’s not usually the case.’

We Live in Time follows Andrew and Florence’s characters, Almut and Tobias, as a chance encounter changes the trajectory of their lives, all while they’re forced to be painfully aware of exactly how much time they have left together.

The catharsis the film offers is profound and has left many wanting more tear-jerking drama to tide them over until the next time Andrew Garfield plays a dreamy romantic lead.

If you fall into that camp, have no fear, here are seven tear-jerking romantic dramas to cure your We Live in Time hangover.

PS I Love You (2007)

While this film has very similar themes to We Live in Time, the ending has a lot more in common with P.S. I Love You’s beginning (no spoilers, don’t worry).

The 2007 American romantic comedy film directed by Richard LaGravenese stars Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler, Lisa Kudrow, Gina Gershon, James Marsters, Harry Connick Jr., and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The plot of the film follows married couple Holly (Swank) and Gerry (Butler), who are madly in love with eachother and used to navigating life’s ups and downs as a team. But then the unspeakable happens, leaving Holly to face the future alone. But Gerry planned for this, leaving behind recorded voice tapes that ultimately prove not even death can conquer love.

A Walk to Remember (2002)

The 2002 romantic drama A Walk to Remember, directed by Adam Shankman, centers around Landon (Shane West) and Jamie (Mandy Moore), two high school students from vastly different worlds.

Landon, the rebellious son of a congressman, is forced to tutor Jamie, a quiet, devout girl with a secret. As their relationship deepens, Landon is drawn into Jamie’s world – a beautiful world he never wants to leave.

Like We Live in Time, A Walk to Remember navigates the complexities of love in the face of inevitable change, and they’re both sure to have you reaching for the tissues before the final credits roll.

The Lake House (2006)

The 2006 romantic drama The Lake House, directed by Alejandro Agresti, stars Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves – which is honestly almost enough to make it worth watching. If you’re a fan of the Speed movies, you know how electric the pair’s chemistry is.

The film’s plot revolves around Kate (Bullock), a doctor living in 2006, and Alex (Reeves), an architect from 2004, who communicate through letters left in a mysterious mailbox at a lake house.

As their connection deepens, they strive to find a way to bridge the gap between their worlds, while also facing the obstacles that time itself places in their path.

Much like We Live in Time, The Lake House explores the themes of love’s transcendent nature and the complexities of timing within relationships. Both films delve into how love can endure despite the forces that seek to tear it apart, albeit with a more fantastical twist in The Lake House.

If you’re willing to get deep into your feels and hold your partner close, this is a great date night option.

About Time (2013)

About Time is the movie a lot of people may think you’re referring to when you say you’re going to see We Live in Time – and the two films have more than just similar titles.

Directed by Richard Curtis, About Time is a romantic comedy-drama that intertwines time travel with the nuances of love and family.

The film follows Tim, who discovers at 21 that he can travel through time, a gift he uses to improve his life and relationships. The narrative delves into how he navigates love, particularly with Mary, and the profound moments shared with his family.

It’s become a beloved British classic and made tons of people eager to try pitch-black dining experiences (if you know, you know).

Muhc like We Live in Time, About Time employs a non-linear structure, weaving through different stages of a couple’s relationship.

Both films explore the theme of time’s impact on relationships, with About Time using literal time travel to reflect on life’s fleeting moments, while We Live in Time presents a more grounded but still mind-bending portrayal.

Me Before You (2016)

Me Before You, directed by Thea Sharrock, is another romantic drama that’s sure to leave audiences in tears for all the right reasons.

The film centers on Louisa ‘Lou’ Clark (Emilia Clarke), who becomes the caregiver for Will Traynor (Sam Claflin), a wealthy banker left paralyzed after an accident.

Despite the major obstacles in his way, Lou is determined to show Traynor that life is still worth living, even if that life suddenly looks different.

Dealing with similar questions as We Live in Time – such as how love is impacted by changes to a loved one’s body – Me Before You is the perfect film for anyone who loves Emilia Clarke or just wants to be reminded that there’s always hope for people brave enough to seek it out.

Beautiful Boy (2018)

While not a romance, per se, Beautiful Boy is a poignant exploration of a different kind of love.

Directed by Felix van Groeningen, Beautiful Boy is a drama based on the true story of a father and son navigating the challenges of addiction.

The film follows David Sheff (Steve Carell) as he struggles to support his son Nic (Timothée Chalamet) through a devastating story of substance abuse, relapse, and recovery.

Similarly to We Live in Time, Beautiful Boy delves into the complexities of familial and romantic relationships against the backdrop of huge change and forces working to tear two people away from each other.

Both narratives underscore the fragility of time and the profound emotional connections that shape our lives, ultimately leaving audiences emotional but hopeful.

The Time Traveller’s Wife (2009)

Directed by Robert Schwentke, The Time Traveller’s Wife is a romantic drama that explores just how much time truly does effect the ebbs and flow of romantic love.

Based on Audrey Niffenegger’s bestselling novel, the film follows Henry (Eric Bana), a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to involuntarily travel through time, and Clare (Rachel McAdams), his wife, who has chosen to love him despite his temporal instability.

Much as We Live in Time explores the complexities of what it means to commit to someone for better or for worse, The Time Traveller’s wife is a powerful exploration of commitment, longing, and the effort required to build a life under extraordinary circumstances.

Besides, who doesn’t love watching Rachael McAdams yearn?
