Cameron Diaz’s latest film which marks her big comeback has garnered overwhelmingly terrible reviews as it arrives on Netflix.
Also starring Jamie Foxx and Glenn Close, Back In Action follows former CIA operatives Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz) 15 years after a mission gone wrong.
Now living under new identities with their children, the duo are forced back into a life of espionage after their secret identities are exposed.
Directed by Seth Gordon, the film was released on Netflix earlier this month and marks Diaz’s first film since 2014’s Annie.
But Back in Action has not been warmly received. At the time of writing, critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it an abysmal 24% rating.
It fared drastically better from fans, scoring 62% on the Popcornmeter.

In their review, The Guardian wrote: ‘While it might prove that Diaz still possesses that same particular magic, it also shows that she should be far more discerning with how she chooses to share it.’
IndieWire said: ‘The uninspired script drags in all the wrong places and the set pieces fail to dazzle, ensuring that the film succeeds as neither an action movie nor a comedy.’
Many praised Diaz’s performance in the film, but critiqued the ‘familiarity’ of the plot that made the film ‘predictable.’
Associated Press’ review stated: ‘Back in movies after more than a decade, Diaz retains her easy charm and has chemistry with Foxx. But this doesn’t mean their lines are funny or logical. Often, they are neither.’
Observer agreed, writing: ‘Cameron Diaz is back from semi-retirement, and she Jamie Foxx have real charisma. But this muddled effort can’t decide if it’s an action movie, comedy, or family film.’

The Wrap summarised: ‘It’s for films like Back in Action that the word “mediocre” was invented, because it’s not that this film is bad. It’s not interesting or ambitious enough to be bad. It simply “is.”‘
It comes as Hollywood icon Diaz, 52, revealed the one way she would return for a sequel of her hit 1994 comedy The Mask.
When asked about the movie in an interview with Access Hollywood, the 52-year-old Charlie’s Angel star said she would return if her co-star Jim Carrey is also keen.
‘If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one!’ she said with a laugh.
Back In Action is available to stream now on Netflix.
