Millions of people are about to be affected in another Netflix price hike.

Currently, for UK viewers, the cheapest subscription costs £4.99 a month and includes adverts.

After a crackdown on password sharing, a standard subscription, without ads but only available on two supported devices at a time, costs £10.00 a month, while the premium option sets subscribers back £19.99 a month and gives the option to add up two to members who don’t live with you for an extra £4.99 each per month.

But viewers overseas are about to face a huge change.

After nearly 19million subscribers joined the streaming service in the final months of 2024, just in time for Squid Game season two and Harlan Coben’s Missing You, Netflix is increasing prices for viewers in the US, Canada, Argentina and Portugal.

A spokesperson for Netflix told the BBC that there is ‘nothing to share right now’ about prices increasing in the UK.

However, in the US, prices will increase across almost all the plans, with the cheapest subscription going up to $7.99 (£6.46) from $6.99 (£5.65).

The standard subscription without adverts will cost $17.99 (£14.54) a month, up from $15.49 (£12.52).

The last time Netflix raised prices in the US and the UK for some plans was in October 2023.

‘We will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix,’ a statement said, according to the BBC.

According to Sky News, Netflix ended 2024 with more than 300million subscribers, an increase of 41millon from 2023.

This comes after it live-streamed two NFL games on Christmas Day, the Jake Paul and Mike Tyson boxing match, and announced WWE Raw would be coming to the platform.

It continued with its success on beloved Netflix titles in the last year including the likes of Bridgerton, Love Is Blind, Heartstopper, and the likes of Baby Reindeer and One Day making their debut.
