There is life in Ghosts yet as it will be returning to our screens one year after the sitcom ended on the BBC.

The comedy starred Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe as couple Alison and Mike Cooper who move into a house inherited from a distant relative inhabited by an array of rowdy ghosts.

Four years and five seasons later the final episode of Ghosts aired on Christmas Day leaving fans ‘destroyed’ and wondering if the show could be reincarnated.

While rumours about the original cast of the BBC show have signed up for a film adaptation, it will also be heading to small screens later this year, although there is a catch.

Ghosts has been revived by Australia and a local version, set in Perth, will be coming to Network 10 and Paramount Plus, meaning UK viewers should be able to watch it on the global streaming platform.

While the show will be given an Aussie flourish it might (dare we say it) end up eclipsing the original, given how Australian spin-offs tend to be superior to their British counterparts – Married At First Sight anyone?

But if you’re looking for something closer to home, the Ghosts movie is reportedly underway with claims bosses are eyeing up A-list talent to pad out the cast.

An insider previously told the Daily Star newspaper’s Hot TV column: ‘A film has been written, and it’s been given the green light.

‘Everyone involved is really excited that Ghosts will be on the big screen.’

The TV show’s acting talent also included Wonka star Simon Farnaby as Julian Fawcett MP and Lolly Adefope as Kitty.

‘It’s hoped that most of the original cast will be able to reprise their roles,’ the insider continued about the film.

‘Producers have already signed up a few of them, and they’re in talks with the others.

‘They think it’ll be a dream cast.’

Lolly previously told Metro she would ‘definitely’ return to Ghosts if a reboot was on the cards.

‘The ending was quite final in a satisfying way. I think it’s harder to cope with if it’s really open-ended, it’s nice to have that finality,’ she responded.

‘But if there was another opportunity, definitely. It was so much fun.’

Ghosts’ grand finale saw the ghouls convince Alison and Mike to sell their house to a hotel company so that they’ll no longer cause any disruption to their lives with their newborn daughter Mia.

But a flash forward to Alison and Mike in their twilight years reveals they regularly stay in their ‘usual suite’ at the hotel to reunite with their spirit friends.

On X, fans said they were ‘weeping’ as they were ‘not prepared for that ending’ as they tuned in on December 25, 2023.

‘The ending of #Ghosts destroyed me, I wasn’t ready I cried so much I’m gonna miss them. But It puts a smile on my face knowing that Alison always came back to visit the guys on Christmas,’ another viewer said.

Ghosts is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
