A global pop star known for her eye-catching looks now appears unrecognisable in a series of new shots.

This week it was announced that Lady Gaga – real name Stefani Germanotta – was set to release her seventh album Mayhem in March.

To mark the occasion, she’s also given an in-depth interview about how making new music allowed her to rediscover herself, as well as finding happiness with her fiancé.

In the photoshoot for Elle UK, Lady Gaga dons a long black wig while wearing a white lace dress and obscuring her face with matching white lace gloves.

Another image shows her in a black pleated dress, posing while pressed up against a wall and another sees her lying in a garden whilst in a red bodysuit and thigh-high black boots.

In one striking shot, Lady Gaga is sitting in an empty room filled with chairs, sitting in the back row with her face covered with a diamante mask and huge feather jacket.

It’s now been five years since her 2020 Grammy nominated album Chromatica was released, with Lady Gaga explaining the significance of her upcoming release.

‘Mayhem is about following your own chaos into whatever cranny of your life that it takes you to. And in that way, it was about following the songs. Writing as many songs as I did for this album was a labour of total love. And then you just have to be very cut-throat by the end,’ she said.

She went on to explain that part of the message of the album was that ‘your demons are with you in the beginning, and they are with you in the end’.

Instead of looking at that in a ‘bleak’ way, Lady Gaga said it was about ‘making friends sooner with this reality instead of running all the time’.

Lady Gaga also spoke about now feeling more ‘present’ (Picture: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/ FilmMagic)

After admitting she used to ‘drink and smoke a lot’ Lady Gaga said she now feels more ‘present’.

‘Sometimes, I worry people will say I’m boring these days, but honestly, thank God I’m boring. Thank God! Because I was living on the edge. I don’t know what was going to happen to me living that way,’ she said.

‘So, the fact that I have these answers, on the one hand, I’m like, “Oh man, snooze fest!! But actually, I’m so grateful. Because I found a sense of happiness and joy that is true to me.’

She also credited fiancé Michael Polansky, whom she became engaged to last year, with helping her change in perspective.

Despite her positive perspective, Lady Gaga did also vocalise her support for the LGBTQIA + community following Trump’s inauguration last week.

‘I know for a lot of people this election was devastating for their existence, so community is going to be the number one thing. I am one of many people that supports the communities. And we’re not going down without a fight. We will stick together. It’s going to be hard but I’m up for it. We’re up for it. And I just want everyone to know how deeply they’re loved and not invisible,’ she said.

When announcing her upcoming album, Lady Gaga said it began as her ‘facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved’.

She described the process as ‘reassembling a shattered mirror: even if you can’t put the pieces back together perfectly, you can create something beautiful and whole in its own new way’.

The March issue of Elle UK is on sale from February 6.
