Netflix viewers have been urged to binge an ‘incredibly powerful’ series with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score as season two has just landed.
Mo first hit screens in 2022 and stars Mo Amer as Mo Najjar, a Palestinian refugee seeking asylum in Houston, Texas.
The semi-autobiographical show explores Mo straddling different cultures, languages and juggling an on-again, off-again Catholic girlfriend his mum disapproves of as well as his chaotic group of friends, while working as a part-time strip-club DJ and bootleg salesman.
Mo has been widely hailed for its depiction of sensitive, political topics including Mo’s family waiting more than two decades to be granted asylum status and questions of identity and a sense of belonging, with the first season ending on a sense of desperation as Mo is stranded in Mexico – the worst place he could possibly be without a passport – after losing his job and his girlfriend.
The poignant and hilarious comedy-drama picks up in season two six months later, with Mo working in Mexico City in various jobs while trying to get himself back to the US in time for his family’s delayed asylum hearing.
He’s faced with a dangerous journey of a border crossing and detention centre – mirroring shocking conditions thousands of people go through in real life – before finally making it home to a life he can barely recognised.

‘Little does he know that the journey home is just the start of his troubles, and there’s a new guy in town ready to steal both his longtime love Maria and his falafel taco recipe,’ the synopsis teases.
Mo earned itself a Gotham award for breakthrough series and Peabody award for entertainment in 2022, and holds a perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating.
‘Beyond amazing!!! I found myself laughing and crying through its episode. It has important things to say and it says it well while making you laugh throughout!’ one reviewer wrote when it was first released.
Another praised: ‘Incredible depiction of the Palestinian struggle in America. Thank you for giving us a voice,’ while a third said: ‘Was not expecting this show to be this good. Loved every episode!’

Speaking ahead of the second season’s release, Amer told Netflix: ‘I’m thankful to continue to tell a universal story of struggle that relates to so many refugees and millions of underrepresented humans trying to be seen around the globe.’
‘[Season 2 has] certainly more drama, more comedy, and lots of family dynamics and romantic troubles,’ he added.
‘When you put your character in the most pressure cooker of situations, comedy just naturally comes out. We were able to find the humor in the most difficult of situations.’
Teasing a third season, he elsewhere said to Vulture: ‘I’m open to potentially doing a third season. It is such a difficult story for me to tell, emotionally.
‘There’s so much more I want to do and accomplish, and I think there’s so much more to this story. But for now, here is where we have to leave it.’
Mo is available to watch on Netflix.
