Cartoon Network has reportedly changed its schedule after two fatal plane crashes in the US.

The channel’s adult division – Adult Swim – has pulled six episodes across five TV shows in light of recent aviation tragedies in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia likely due to the potentially insensitive nature of the content.

Earlier this month, a commercial American Airlines jet was involved in a mid-air collision with a military helicopter while landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport, killing 67 people.

Just days later, a medical plane went down in Philadelphia, with six people on board and one person on the ground dying.

In light of the tragic events, it appears Cartoon Network has removed various episodes from its usual schedule, per X account CNschedules.

Which Family Guy episodes are being pulled?

The two Family Guy episodes are Boy (Dog) Meets Girl (Dog) and Yug Ylimaf.

As well as The Amazing World of Gumball episode The Saint; Courage the Cowardly Dog episode Scuba-Scuba Doo; Robot Chicken episode Happy Russian Deathdog Dolloween 2 U; and Eric Andre Show episode Hannibal Quits.

Each episode has a reference to a plane disaster. In The Saint, Gumball and Darwin jump out of a plane during a charity event with the plane crashing into a building shortly after.

In Scuba-Scuba Doo there is an action sequence involving an old warplane which blown up by a torpedo before being used as a submarine-style weapon.

Family Guy’s season 16 episode Boy (Dog) Meets Girl (Dog) includes a 9/11 joke while season 11’s Yug Ylimaf features a plane crash.

The Robot Chicken episode features a scene where plane parts come crashing through a ceiling during a Halloween party. And finally, Hannibal Quits shows a scene where Eric falls out of a plane.

As pointed out, Cartoon Network has had to apologise for airing insensitively timed episodes before such as in 2013 when they apologised to people in Oklahoma, recently impacted by a tornado, for airing a Family Guy episode involving a tornado reference.

It is commonplace for TV networks to adjust schedules around real-world events.

In 2013, an episode of ABC’s Castle which included an accidentally triggered bomb was delayed by a week following the Boston Marathon bombing.

In 2020, Spongebob Squarepants episode Kwarantined Krab in which there is an outbreak of ‘clam flu’ at the Krusty Krab, was removed from streaming for two years after coinciding with the start of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

And after September 1, 2001, several episodes of TV were either pulled or edited including shows like Friends and The Simpsons.

There is no indication when the current Cartoon Network episodes which have been removed will be back in rotation.
