Suits fans have been left speechless after realising they were wrong about the meaning of the show’s name.

It followed college dropout Mike Ross (Patrick J Adams) as he tricked his way into a job at New York law firm Pearson Hardman, working as the associate to cocky lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) despite not having a law degree.

The acclaimed legal drama, which also starred Meghan Markle, originally ran for nine seasons between 2011 and 2019 on the USA Network before becoming a surprise hit on Netflix in 2023.

However, even though there may be 14 years of Suits – which is still going strong in the form of a recent spin-off – viewers have only just learnt the significance of the show’s name.

The prevailing theory from viewers was that Suits owed its name to the suited and booted characters’ attires. But that is incorrect. It is the shortened version of lawsuit.

On Instagram, @itssuitsquotes remarked: ‘7 seasons in. Just realised it’s called Suits because they’re lawyers and suit is short for lawsuit, not just because they were suits all the time.’

And they were not alone in that belief. In the comments, @ah3yo exclaimed: ‘WAIT THAT’S WHAT IT MEANS?.?????#?#?#?’

@paz_dior said: ‘I thought it was cause they had to SUIT UP (Barney from himym) to go to court or whatever lawyers do ahahahha.’

Quoting Will Ferrell’s film Blades of Glory, @zk.ptt wrote: ‘No one knows what it means, but it’s provocative.’

Refusing to get on board with Suits’ real meaning, @nehal_elkoshairy_nutritionist joked: ‘Nope… It’s because they were fancy suits … Don’t ruin it for us.’

@Em.noble quipped: ‘I am an actual lawyer and didn’t put two and two together.’

But fans are not entirely wrong in believing the show’s title is a nod towards clothing as show creator Aaron Korsh previously revealed.

In 2023, the 58-year-old hosted a Q&A on X where he was asked about Suits’ meaning.

Aaron responded: ‘It’s actually a triple meaning. The suits they wear, lawsuits and people who work in business are called suits.

‘However, to be fair, the one who came up with the name was Alex Sepiol, the executive at USA Network. Without Alex, #Suits would never have made it to air.’

On Sunday, the first episode of the eagerly-anticipated Suits LA series aired on NBC in the US, introducing viewers to powerful lawyer Ted Black (Stephen Amell), as he battles to keep his firm afloat.

Lex Scott Davis, Josh McDermitt and Bryan Greenberg are also in the cast, with Gabriel set to reprise his role as Harvey Specter for a brief cameo.

Despite returning to the courtroom for the new episodes, viewers criticised the spin-off, which currently has a dismal 34% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a critics ranking of just 35%.

‘Was so disappointed! The cast lacked chemistry and the plot was dull,’ Diane M said on the platform.

‘It jumped right into a plot with introducing you to the new city, firm or characters. I’ll try episode 2 but not looking promising.’

Ryan Q commented: ‘What an absolute train wreck. As a massive Suits fan I cant believe how tragic this pilot was.’

Suits is available to stream on Netflix.
