Netflix’s Adolescence has managed to capture attention like few other drams before it with just four episodes.

The blistering drama follows Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) who is accused of murdering his schoolmate Katie.

The series begins with a police raid on his home and his arrest, with each episode filmed in real-time and in one shot featuring incredible performances from the likes of Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and Ahsley Walter.

Newcomer Owen Cooper is already predicted to sweep up at awards season despite having no acting experience before his audition.

Adolescence has been hailed as a limited series, its four episodes telling a complete story of Jamie’s arrest and the 13 months that follow.

Still though, fans are desperate for more and begging for another series.

Surely, with Adolescence being streamed over 24 million times in four days, there must be more episodes to follow, right?

Appearing on today’s Lorraine, Christine Tremarco – who stars as Jamie’s mother Manada – appeared to quash any suggestion of a season 2 after Lorraine asked about the potential for the story to continue.

‘You’re not alone, a couple of people have said that! But maybe that’s a good thing because it leaves you thinking about what would happen afterward. But, I think this is a one-off. I think it ends with episode four,’ she said.

Writer Jack Thorne has stressed he felt the limited series has answered every question it intended to and his co-creator Graham told Tudum: ‘We knew that we wanted to end it in [Jamie’s] room. We wanted the journey to finish where it began.’

Why there needs to be a season 2 

Jamie’s story might be wrapped up but there are so many stories about the draw of the ‘manosphere’ to young men and the increasingly concerning rise of incel culture popularised by the likes of Andrew Tate.

Adolescence captures so much in its four episodes, but there is so much more to explore.

Metro recently spoke to a teacher who told us Adolescence just scratches the surface when it comes to the reality of what’s happening among young boys and their concerning behaviour toward girls.

‘I think it misses the scale of misogynistic abuse and violence that happens in our schools every day,’ *Emma said.

‘Young women are reporting it and not enough is being done to prevent girls at school being harassed and abused by their classmates.

‘Also it misses the scale of violence in our society, not even just against women, but young men committing acts of violence because of their these belief systems and because they are feeling so angry at the world.’

How likely is a season 2?

Initially, there didn’t seem to be much hope for a second series of Adolescence but according to sources Netflix is keen to replicate the success with a new story.

‘Execs are thrilled by the results and acclaim for Adolescence,’ a source told The Sun.

‘It’s seen as a format that can run and run, at least to a second series if not further, as it could take in a different teen issue each series.

‘The topic has resonated with viewers because it taps into parents’ biggest fear and there’s plenty of scope for more in the same vein.

‘Stylistically, the one-take creative approach could become the hallmark of the series. It’s one of the aspects which has got everyone talking.’

Is Adolescence based on a true story?

Adolescence wasn’t based on a specific case, despite the misinformation being spread by Elon Musk, but a sequence of crushing news stories about young boys attacking or killing young girls.

Sadly, the escalation of knife crime means the potential for Adolescence to return as an anthology series isn’t just inevitable to build on its success, it feels essential.

There are so many different angles to knife crime that need to be heard, from the teachers like Emma who easily identify boys influenced by incel culture.

 They are quiet, they are distrustful of women, they’re angry,’ she told us.

‘They’re incredibly hard to reach, incredibly hard to create connections with, and especially in teaching English a lot of our work is discussion-based, so that’s normally how you form connections with students by giving them a space to have their opinions.

‘But quite often those kinds of boys keep their opinions themselves or share quite extreme opinions about society and about women so they get shut down by their classmates which makes them not want to share again because they get labelled as weird.’
