‘Just Heartbroken’ – Novak Djokovic Expresses His Disappointment After Former Coach Boris Becker Gets Sentenced to Jail
Novak Djokovic is having a difficult year on many fronts. He had a forgettable time in Australia after a controversy erupted surrounding him regarding his visa cancelation. Subsequently, he missed the opening Grand Slam of the season after his deportation from Australia. Further, his first tournament was in Dubai at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. However, he had a disappointing quarterfinals exit, losing against Jiri Vesely.
On the back of his defeat in Dubai, Djokovic briefly lost his Number 1 ranking to Daniil Medvedev. The Serb has played only three tournaments this season, with his best showing coming in his native country. At the Serbia Open, he made it to the finals, losing out to Andrey Rublev in the summit clash.
Recently, Djokovic’s former coach, Boris Becker, was sentenced to jail. Subsequently, the Serb has reacted to this news.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion expressed his disappointment after his former coach got sentenced to jail. Talking about it, he said, “Just heartbroken, I mean, for him. He’s a friend, long-time friend, a coach for three, four years, someone I consider close in my life and has contributed a lot to my success in my career. I was just heartbroken.”

Further, he added, “I’m not going to get into details of the verdict, because I’m not in a position to do that, but as his friend, you know, I’m super sad for him. It’s not much that you can say.”

Boris Becker, a six-time grand slam champion, received a two and a half years jail sentence over bankruptcy. He was found guilty of hiding £2.5m worth of assets and loans in order to avoid paying debts.

Further, on the tennis front, Djokovic will play in the Madrid Open this week. He is the top seed in the tournament and has got a bye in the opening round. In the second round, he will face the winner of the match between Carlos Gimeno Valero and Gael Monfils.
