Canelo Alvarez Reveals Who Inspired Him to Get Started in the Sport of Boxing

Pound-for-pound king, Canelo Alvarez, is inarguably the biggest boxing star of this generation. The accomplished Mexican is a four-weight class champion and also holds the maiden undisputed super-middleweight title.

The 31-year-old is in the prime days of his career and many speculate that the best version of Alvarez is yet to come. But have you wondered who inspired him to get to the sport of boxing?

Recently, DAZN Boxing shared a video of Canelo on its YouTube channel. In the video, the Mexican icon narrated the entire story of getting into the sport of boxing.

He said, ” I started because of my oldest brother. I saw his professional debut. Since then, it’s like my eyes turned into gloved-shaped hearts. Since then, I said, ‘I want to be a boxer. I want to be a boxer.’ Since then, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. Then he moved for two years to Tijuana. I would ask him “please take me with you. I would like to be a boxer like you.” But my dad wouldn’t let me go.”(google translator)

Furthermore, Alvarez added he went to train with ‘Chepo’ in a proper gym. According to Alvarez, he took his initial training at his brother’s suggestion. He also revealed how there were several world champions in the gym like “Chololo” and “Chato” Jauregui that gave him hope.

The modern-day boxing icon was born the youngest of eight children to his parents. All his brothers were already pursuing boxing, so eventually, boxing became a matter of interest to him. His older brother Rigoberto Alvarez inspired him to become a professional boxer.

At the age of 13, he ventured into the sport. The first accolade that he clinched was the silver medal at the ‘Junior Mexican National championships’ in 2004 and the next year he became a champion at the same event. However, he didn’t prolong his amateur career and turned pro-early.

The Upcoming Fight of Canelo: Venue and date

The pound-for-pound is all set to move in a higher weight division against the Russian pugilist Dmitry Bivol. The highly anticipated showdown will land on May 7, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with the WBA light heavyweight title in the row.
