Simon Rimmer accidentally cut his thumb open while grating carrots on air during Sunday Brunch.

The TV chef usually gets through recipes without incident but he briefly took his eye off the ball on Sunday afternoon.

It came shortly after he joked with YouTube star and guest Joe Sugg about the moment he fainted on Celebrity Bake Off after slicing the top off his finger.

Simon’s reaction to grating his finger open wasn’t quite the same, but he did quip that the show had help on standby in case he hit the deck.

Ater grating the vegetable to add to his recipe, Simon, 57, told Joe: ‘I don’t want to alarm you but I’ve actually just managed to grate my thumb.’

Referring to Joe’s turn on Bake Off he joked: ‘If we have got the standby team for when I faint!’

His co-host Tim Lovejoy noted that Simon might need some assistance, saying: ‘I think you might actually need to put a plaster on that.’

The incident prompted Strictly Come Dancing star Joe to joke that he was a ‘bad omen’ and he put his head in his hands.

‘So what I’m going to do is use spoons for everything now,’ Simon later quipped.

Joe insisted after his Bake Off accident that he didn’t faint because he didn’t like the sight of blood, but because he was ‘exhausted’ at the time and he is squeamish when it comes to his nails.

‘What it was, was [the cut] went diagonal, it went through my finger and deep through my nail. Things that freak me out is when I bite my nails too far back or I cut a nail, which makes it sound even worse,’ he explained.

‘It’s not the cut that made me faint, it was that I broke my nail.’

Sunday Brunch airs Sundays from 9.30am on Channel 4.
