‘He’s Working With a Psychologist’ – Carlos Alcaraz’s Coach Details How Much Mental Training He Takes

Carlos Alcaraz has had an incredible transformation over the last few years. He had an impressive finish to the last season, winning the ATP Next Gen Finals. Alcaraz defeated Sebastian Korda of the United States in the summit clash of that tournament to win the title. He has carried his good form into this year and has already won three titles. A major contribution to his steep rise has been that of his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrer.

Alcaraz started working with the former French Open champion, Ferrero in September 2018. Only 15 back then, Alcaraz received precious guidance from his compatriot. Recently, Ferrero talked about Alcaraz’s mental aspect of the game.

Juan Carlos Ferrero reveals why Carlos Alcaraz is working with a psychologist

Earlier this week, Ferrero talked about the development of Alcaraz during a conversation on the ATP Podcast. Revealing the mental aspect while playing tennis, he said, “I think it’s important. A young player like Carlos, he’s working with a psychologist, just to make some routines on the court or you know, talk about what he’s living right now, that is a lot, try to make him follow the way that is good and to sometimes remember what was the work he was doing to arrive where he is right now. That’s also important.”

Further, he added, “But of course, coaches, we are also like psychologists as well. We talk with him every day and we talk about all these things we’re talking now and what he has to do, he was doing or what he needs to do, what he needs to improve. But, as you said, people now invest a lot in having big team around. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s not right. But what I think, you have to be with people around that increase your level. It’s very easy to have people that only want your money and this is something you have to stay worried about it.”
