Video footage posted to Twitter shows Sainz, 27, clambering through a tiny opening in the pitwall.

But the Spaniard was just a little too tall to fit through the gap.

As he went to pull his body through Sainz painfully smashed his head on the metal fencing.

He can then be seen holding his hand on his hair as blood trickled down his forehead.

Ferrari team-mate, and current F1 championship leader, Charles Leclerc, watched on as Sainz banged his head by the side of the track.

The incident came just hours before the start of race weekend in Miami.

Practice is set to get underway at the Miami Gardens street track at 7.30pm this evening (UK time).

And Sainz will be hoping his injury doesn’t hamper his chances in the race.

The Ferrari man hasn’t had the best of luck recently.

He retired on the first lap last time out at the Emilia Romagna GP, and also failed to finish the previous race in Melbourne.

But prior to that he kicked off the season with back-to-back podiums, finishing second in Bahrain and third in Saudi Arabia.
