Back To Life is officially coming back for a second series.

Daisy Haggard confirmed that the BBC Three dark comedy-drama, which landed on Netflix earlier this year, has begun filming a second series, so we get to see what happens after that cliffhanger.

The actress shared a picture of herself holding a clapperboard, confirming the first take was filmed on March 29.

She tweeted: ‘#backtolife is coming BACK  .. Delighted to finally get going on season 2!! And spoiler alert.. MIRI HAS FOUND HER OLD CRIMPER!’

With the confirmation of the new episodes comes fresh casting news, as Meera Syal and Adrian Edmondson have joined the cast, although their characters have not yet been revealed.

Returning cast includes Adeel Akhtar as Billy, Geraldine James as Miri’s mum Caroline, Christine Bottomley as Mandy, Jo Martin as Miri’s parole officer Janice, Richard Durden as Miri’s dad Oscar, Jamie Michie as Dom and Juliet Cowan as Tina.

Series two of Back to Life will air on BBC Three and Showtime later this year.

Daisy said: ‘Daisy Haggard said: “Laura [Solon] and I are thrilled to finally start shooting the second series of Back to Life. We were blown away by the reception to the first series, so it was both nerve wracking and exciting to write season two ! We can’t wait for you all to see the next chapter…’

Shane Allen, Director of Comedy Commissioning at the BBC said: ‘The clever and twisted storytelling delves even deeper in this propulsive mystery peppered with playful black humour. This is a golden age for UK comedy talent to reach audiences across the world with the BBC kick-starting the journey.’

Back to Life is the story of Miri Matteson (Haggard) who returns to her home in Kent after serving 18 years in prison.

She attempts to rebuild old relationships and make new friends, but her hometown is less than hospitable due to her crime.

** Spoilers ahead for Back to Life series one **

Miri was jailed over the death of her friend Lara, who she pushed off a cliff when she attacked Miri.

In the finale, we discover that Lara discovered that one of her best friends was having sex with her father, and confronted Mandy. However, instead of confessing it was her, Mandy lied and told Lara that Miri was having the affair, leading to the confrontation that resulted in her death.

The ending also hinted at a flourishing romance between Miri and Billy, as they enjoyed an ice-cream together on the beach.

Back to Life is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
