The saddest part about being a football fan is knowing that your favorite player is going to retire one day. That reality might finally be here for millions of fans, as both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi move closer to the age when others call it quits.

Messi is still relatively young and is only 34, but Ronaldo turned 37 this season, and might not be able to play at this level for long. Their performances have dropped significantly compared to last season, especially Messi’s. The Argentinian forward won the Ballon d’Or for his performances with FC Barcelona last season.

However, he has been just another name on the teamsheet in that loaded Paris Saint Germain squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s streak comes to an end

As the club season nears its end, leagues start nearing their conclusion and things become clearer. Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, both have missed out on being nominated for being the best player or forward in their leagues. Moreover, Messi is nowhere near winning the golden boot with just four league goals.

Ronaldo still has a mathematical chance to win it as he has 18 Premier League goals this season, four lesser than league leader Mohamed Salah. However, he has just one game to reach there and Salah still has two more games to play.

It’s not surprising that both of them have declined this late into their careers, but it’s still a very harsh end to the careers of two of the greatest players of all time. Of course, people could be wrong in considering them out, and they could come back stronger next season.

However, that seems like a pipe dream at this point.

The FIFA World Cup

The most important thing that would be coming up for both of them in six months’ time is the FIFA World Cup. It could likely be the last World Cup in which they both feature and winning it would become all the more important.

Messi and Ronaldo have won everything there is to win in the sport of football, and if either of them wins the World Cup, it’ll immortalize their careers even more.
