This year’s Call The Midwife will bring back characters from previous seasons for an emotional Christmas Special.

The show’s star Stephen McGann has revealed that viewers are in for a tear jerker, with beloved old faces returning for a special appearance in the period drama.

‘Starting with the Christmas special, what I can say is that there is a return of some familiar characters from the past, in a very moving way,’ said Stephen, who plays Dr Turner.

‘I think it draws on its own history again, but there’s a lot of joy at Christmas as usual.

‘But there’s also a great story there too, and it’s been really enjoyable to do.’

When asked if he could spill any beans on what might happen in the upcoming 12th series,  which is currently filming, the actor added to RadioTimes.com: ‘For the next series, I think it feels very open after the pandemic.

‘There’s a good vibe at the moment on set. So I’m really looking forward to the dynamic of the new series – although we don’t get told a great deal, so we don’t know any big secrets!’

His co-stars Helen George and Laura Main, who were also with Stephen in the joint chat, also backed up his sentiment that the return to normality after the pandemic had been a huge relief for the cast.

Stepehen left fans in a tizzy last month after he shared news that both he and co-star Laura Main had been nominated in the same category for a National Television Award in September.

Taking to Twitter, the actor retweeted the post from Call the Midwife’s official account which read: ‘NEWS! #NTAAwards 2022 longlist nominations announced! #CallTheMidwife – Returning Drama, @LauraMain1 (Shelagh) – Drama Performance. @StephenMcGann (Dr Turner) – Drama Performance.’

While fans were pleased that the programme had been nominated, they shared that they didn’t know if they should vote for Laura or her on-screen husband, Stephen.

One wrote: ‘How can we possibly choose between Laura and Stephen?’

Another agreed: ‘Oh this is gonna be tricky! I love them equally!’

Meanwhile, Call The Midwife creator Heidi Thomas has been named an OBE after being recognised for her services to drama, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
