Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series on Disney Plus: Cast, release date and everything you need to know

Star Wars fans are set to be transported to a galaxy far, far away all over again, with a new Obi-Wan Kenobi series headed to Disney Plus.

It’s set to follow the hugely popular Mandalorian in landing on the streaming service, there are some big names already signed up for the new drama.

There are some familiar faces from the Star Wars prequels along for the ride, plus some serious Hollywood talent ready to mix things up.

The show is being described by Lucasfilm as a ‘special event series’, which suggests the story will be self-contained, rather than an expanding series like The Mandalorian.

Deborah Chow is the main creative force behind the project, having previously directed two episodes of the The Mandalorian’s first series.

Who is in the cast of the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series?

Star Wars fans were overjoyed when the first cast list of the Obi-Wan Kenobi project was announced – with Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan and Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker reuniting from the film prequels.

Elsewhere, Bonnie Piesse, who played Beru in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, and Joel Edgerton, who played her husband Owen, have been confirmed to return for the series too.

Marvel’s The Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani is also along for the ride, along with Indira Varma (Game Of Thrones, This Way Up).

Rupert Friend (Homeland), O’Shea Jackson (Straight Outta Compton), Sung Kang (Fast and Furious 6), Simone Kessell (Reckoning, The Crossing) and Benny Safdie (Pieces of a Woman, Good Time) are also in the cast.

The new series will take place in the gap between the Star Wars prequel trilogy and A New Hope, with the drama set nine years after the events of Revenge of the Sith.

Revenge of the Sith ended with Obi-Wan defeating Anakin Skywalker in battle, only for his body to be retrieved by Emperor Palpatine and transformed into Darth Vader.

The official synopsis from Disney reads: ‘The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Kenobi faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.’

When will the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series be released?

Production will begin on the series this April, and the series has yet to be given an official release date.

The drama is expected to arrive in 2022.
