First Dates star Merlin Griffiths has revealed he is back in hospital after suffering a setback in his fight against bowel cancer

The 47-year-old, who works in the restaurant on the popular Channel 4 series, announced he had been diagnosed with the disease in September last year. He recently underwent surgery to have a tumour removed and was said to be keeping ‘positive’.

On Tuesday, Merlin shared an update with his Instagram followers and wrote: ‘Oh… Squibwibble. #complications.’

The post included a photo of himself laying in a hospital bed with a face mask on and a bandage on his hand.

Merlin was inundated with well wishes from his followers, including chef and food writer Sabrina Ghayour, who wrote: ‘Sending you so much love, hope it gets better soon xx.’

One follower showed support and commented: ‘Sending positive vibes and wishing you better. You got this!’

One fan told the star: ‘I was only thinking of you this morning. You’re doing so well even though it feels like a step backwards at this moment. Rest and heal…its a blip and will blip off soon. Big hugs.’

Offering their kind words, another wrote: ‘Merlin, you got this! The Warrior is praying for you and sending you blessings for strength and support. We’ll meet one day at your pub and this will all be water under the bridge. Keep strong and hang in there. Much [love].’

It comes just weeks after First Dates star Fred Sirieux promised to keep in touch with his ‘incredible’ co-star, and said the barman is ‘incredibly stoic in the face of what’s happening to him’.

‘I really love him. He’s incredibly positive and pragmatic as well. I’m just not surprised because that’s the type of guy he is. You can always rely on Merlin,’ Fred told the Mail Online

He revealed that he has been speaking over the phone and texting with Merlin, ‘making sure he’s ok’.

Merlin underwent surgery in April after raising awareness during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

After the surgery, he thanked the NHS for ‘literally saving my life’.
