The Friday edition of This Morning has been pulled off air following the news of Prince Philip’s death at the age of 99.

On Friday April 9, the royal family announced in a statement that Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, had died this morning at Windsor Castle.

The statement read: ‘It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

‘His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.’

This Morning was being hosted by Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford when it was cancelled.

The couple were speaking to Coronation Street’s Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs on the soap, when the announcement was made.

‘Alan I’m sorry, I have to interrupt you for some very, very important news,’ Eamonn said.

‘We now viewers have to end This Morning and go straight to the ITV newsroom for more.’

After transitioning to ITV News, the news of Prince Philip’s death was shared with viewers.

The Duke was recently treated at King Edward VII Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital for an infection.

Funeral arrangements will be made in the coming days for the Duke, who was the longest-reigning consort in British history.

Eamonn and Good Morning Britain weatherman Alex Beresford have led tributes to the late royal, with Eamonn tweeting: ‘HRH Prince Phillip has died. #RIP.’

Alex tweeted: ‘So sad! Thoughts with the whole of the Royal family!’

Downing Street has lowered its flag to half-mast as a mark of respect to Prince Philip.
