Channel 5 has changed its TV schedule following Prince Philip’s death, after a film titled Dying For The Crown was due to air.

It was announced that the Duke of Edinburgh has died at the age of 99, with Buckingham Palace issuing a statement.

Channel 5 was initially due to broadcast the 2018 thriller, which is also known under the titles A Fatal Reunion, and Homecoming Revenge.

The broadcaster has instead cut to special programming and coverage following the death of the royal.

A statement from Buckingham Palace announced the news of Prince Philip’s death, reading: ‘It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

‘His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.’

Buckingham Palace said further announcements will be made in due course, adding: ‘The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.’

The Duke, the longest-reigning consort in British history, had recently been treated at King Edward VII Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

He initially received care for an infection but then underwent heart surgery for a pre-existing condition.

He returned to Windsor Castle on March 16 to be reunited with the Queen after spending a month in the hospitals – his longest ever stay.

Tributes have been flooding in for the late royal, with Piers Morgan writing: ‘A truly great Briton who dedicated his life to selfless public duty & was an absolute rock of devoted support to Her Majesty, The Queen, as the longest-serving royal consort to any British sovereign. A very sad day for our country. Thank you, Sir.’

The creators of The Crown also shared a statement reading: ‘Netflix, Left Bank Pictures, Sony Pictures Television and the production team on The Crown are deeply saddened to hear of the death of The Duke of Edinburgh.

‘Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this sad time.’

Prince Philip was portrayed by Matt Smith, and then Tobias Menzies in the popular drama about the Royal Family.
