Warning: major spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 4 volume 2.

After Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill became the anthem of Stranger Things season 4 volume 1, Metallica’s Master of Puppets has followed suit in volume 2, thanks to Eddie Munson’s electrifying guitar solo in the Upside Down.

The band have since celebrated the placement of their 1986 song in the ‘pivotal scene’, which featured Eddie actor Joseph Quinn shredding the instrument in real life.

In an Instagram post, the heavy metal band shared the clip from the season finale on Netflix, as Eddie plugs in his electric guitar and puts on the performance of his life to distract the demobats from the Creel house, with Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) at his side.

At the same time, Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) is desperately trying to run away from Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) after her mind is invaded by the superpowered being, during which she’s haunted by yet another vision of her late brother Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery).

In their statement, Metallica showered the show’s creators the Duffer brothers with praise, saying the way they’ve ‘incorporated music into Stranger Things has always been next level’.

The band said that they were ‘beyond psyched for them to not only include Master of Puppets in the show, but to have such a pivotal scene built around it’.

‘We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did we were totally blown away…’ they wrote.

‘It’s so extremely well done, so much so, that some folks were able to guess the song just by seeing a few seconds of Joseph Quinn’s hands in the trailer!! How crazy cool is that?’

They concluded by saying how honoured they felt to be among the artists whose music has been featured in the smash hit sci-fi series.

‘It’s an incredible honor to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again be keeping company with all of the other amazing artists featured in the show,’ they stated.

If anyone was thinking that the guitar solo was simply too epic to be real… they’d be wrong.

Yes – that was really Joseph playing (Picture: Netflix)

Joseph, who quickly become a fan-favourite in the cast after making his debut in season four volume one, really was playing, recalling how the Duffer brothers texted him to ask if he could play the guitar a few months into the pandemic, before he was sent the final script.

‘I was like “Are you serious?” They were like, “Yeah.” And I thought “OK.” So I went and bought a guitar and then practised manically for months until we ended up shooting the thing,’ he told RadioTimes.com.

While he’s played the guitar since he was a child, Joseph admitted that he received some help from a ‘black belt metal guitarist’ for the solo, while he ‘had most of the song down’.

Metallica’s Master of Puppets has been climbing the charts since the finale dropped, making waves on the US Billboard 200, the UK Official Charts and Spotify’s Top 50 Global playlist.

Stranger Things is available to watch on Netflix.
