Warning: spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 4 volume 2.
The latest season of Stranger Things proved to be its darkest yet, but according to the showrunners the ending could have been a lot worse.
Fans of the hit Netflix show are still reeling from the emotional and devastating season four finale which saw the sinister events come to a head in Hawkins and the Upside Down, with the gang putting a plan in place to take down Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).
Although the team teased big deaths in the latest instalment, the original members including Eleven, (Millie Bobby Brown) Mike, (Finn Wolfhard) Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Will (Noah Schnapp) made it out alive.
However, in the two-hour season finale Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) is defeated by Vecna’s curse and appears to die in Lucas’ (Caleb McLaughlin) arms, allowing Vecna to fully unleash the Upside Down’s power.
Two days after the final battle Mike, Will, Eleven, Argyle (Eduardo Franco) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) discover Max is still alive, but in a coma in hospital.
While Max’s fate is unknown, show creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that they considered killing her character off altogether.

Speaking about the finale in the Stranger Things aftershow, Matt explained: ‘It was discussed as a possibility. For a while that is what was going to happen.
‘But we ended up in this… we wanted to end it with a little more of a question at the end of the season.’
‘It’s still really dark and if Max is going to be okay, we just don’t really know,’ he added.
‘We wanted to leave it up in the air moving forward into Season 5.’

This comes after actress Millie, 18, criticised the writers for failing to ‘kill off’ more characters.
In a resurfaced interview, Noah and Millie playfully suggested for the Duffer Brothers to ‘start killing off people,’ as the cast is ‘way too big.’
‘The Duffer brothers are two sensitive Sallies that don’t want to kill anyone off. We need to be Game of Thrones. We need to have the mindset of Game of Thrones,’ the Enola Holmes actress told The Wrap.

Writers Matt and Ross have confirmed that there will be a fifth chapter of the sci-fi series, although a release date and plot details are still being kept under wraps.
The show came back with a bang and has not only seen success in the streaming charts but also in the music charts, with singer songwriter Kate Bush returning to the top 10 with Running Up That Hill for the first time in over a decade, thanks to the show making her 1985 track viral.
Stranger Things is available to stream on Netflix.
