Readers discuss the games they’re most looking forward to in the coming months and years, including God Of War and Sonic Frontiers.

The subject for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Campbell, based on the fact that the E3 announcement season is now over and most of the games for this year have now been announced.

Although it’s a smaller range than usual, there were plenty of 2022 games that people were excited about, although 2023 titles such as Starfield and Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 seemed to get the most mentions.

A packed year
I think everyone realises it’s a pretty quiet looking Christmas (gotta love that stupid Bayonetta 3 release date!) but I think there are some gems in there. I’d love to say the game I’m most looking forward to is XCOM 3, since it’s just about the only game from the Nvidia leak yet to be confirmed.

Midnight Suns will do very well while I wait though, as it seems to be a similar sort of game and Firaxis are obvious well practised at strategy games. For similar reasons I’m also interested in Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, as the original was really good.

The Callisto Protocol also has my interest, although I’m a little concerned it may be a bit too gory and charmless for me. There’s a reason Resident Evil is so beloved and it’s because it’s scary but also quite goofy, so it doesn’t end up leaving you depressed when you play it.

If we’re talking about most anticipated game regardless of release date though it’s got to be Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2. I’ve no idea when it’ll be out but I’ll be there day zero when it is, no questions asked.

James Bond will return
There are a few games on the horizon that I’m looking forward to, but I wasn’t sure if we could list all those we’re looking forward to or just our one most anticipated and that would be the 007 game from Io-Interactive. Perhaps this is foolish given that we know very little about the game other than the developers. But the fact that Io-Interactive are on board gives me great hope that they can do a fantastic job, given how great the Hitman games have been.

I think it will have to be a very different game to Hitman but there are some similarities in gameplay terms which I could see transitioning into a Bond game, and the style and detail of the Hitman games is already quite fitting.

Despite my excitement though, there is some concern, as Io have had a few duds when they have ventured outside the Hitman realm with Kane & Lynch. I am also concerned by their storytelling chops, which has never been that interesting in the Hitman games, but I feel will need to be much improved for a Bond game. Hopefully they will have hired some new talent to improve on that aspect, so we can another great Bond game.

GC: Lists are boring, better to talk about what you’re most interested in, as you’ve done.

Bewitching choice
Saints Row-boot could still be interesting. Probably not game of the year material, maybe 7 or 8 out of 10, tops, right? I was ready to write off Sonic Frontiers completely after a pretty damning preview from GamesRadar, but recently I saw a video from a YouTuber who seems to specialise in Sonic content that claims the IGN material, which was presumably played by the man from GamesRadar, was from an earlier build – and things could yet be more promising. But probably not by that much. Very unlikely to be giving Elden Ring or even Lego Star Wars any sleepless nights.

So, that means Bayonetta 3. We know it will be out just in time for Halloween and it looks a lot more vibrant than the last gameplay trailer. Sadly, Enzo has come back. Oh, sweet Jesus. And Viola’s personality seems a touch bland – your typical, earnest rookie. Big question, though: so that’s not the original voice actress in the lead role? And it’s still giving me prequel vibes in terms of story, yet Luca is in it. And Jeanne wears her hair super-long.

I really should get round to playing through the second game, shouldn’t I?

Survival horror
As a fan of the Moomins, the one game I’m looking forward to more than any other is Snufkin: Melody Of Moominvalley.

In my mind it’s basically Moomins: Breath Of The Wild but I’m prepared for a little disappointment on that one. Nevertheless, it looks like it’s going to be a visually stunning adventure with lots of fan service and Sigur Rós music.

Alas, I don’t like rhythm action sequences so I’m hoping they’re either well implemented or not too numerous.

Either way, it’s out next year so I’ll just have to wait. For how else can spring come back again?

GC: To our surprise, it turns out this game actually exists and you didn’t just dream it:

False alarm
I must be honest, there is two games I’m most looking forward to. God Of War Ragnarök the first one, I loved the last one and I’m hoping the new one is not like Horizon Forbidden West, where there was nothing new and it could’ve of been DLC.

The second game has to be Modern Warfare 2. I love Infinity Ward and I love modern era Call Of Duty. There has been so many WW2 and future set games I’ve got bored of them and I know that there has been a lot of modern day ones but I just love Call Of Duty in that setting. Infinity Ward has to be the best at modern day Call Of Duty, the only thing I’m not looking forward to is next gen prices.

I mean, last gen prices are £70 so you’re talking at least £80 for next gen and for me that’s a lot, so me and my mate are sharing the price and game sharing. I know what some will say to that but I’m not paying £80+ for a game that’s out for 12 months and then a new one comes out and the battle pass price is added on. If they stop game sharing then I’ll be giving up gaming altogether, I’m not being ripped off anymore though greedy companies.

GC: The next gen and last gen games are sold in the same package, for £70.

GT killer
I’m most looking forward to the next Forza, which I believe is coming out next year.

I’m quite jealous of Gran Turismo 7 on the PlayStation 5, as the driving looks impressive. I’m hoping that Forza Motorsport is equally as good, if not better. The Microsoft event last month had a preview and it did look great.

Out of this world choices
Bethesda’s Starfield is to me a game worth being excited for. There are a lot of good indie and other mainstream titles coming up over the next couple of years or so, especially Elder Scrolls 6. But that sounds like a faraway dream at the moment. Saying that, maybe Starfield is a distant dream also!

The overall premise of the game, made by developers who seem very passionate about what they’re doing, is very hopeful indeed. I am a big Mass Effect and Dead Space fan and Starfield seems to be a mind-blowing affair like those titles.

The game world does remind me of a Fallout/Mass Effect type of affair, the environments seem to show this from some post-apocalyptic looking settlements and frontier looking style buildings. It’s hard to see how different planets will be done and how the flying to them works, plus the orbital approach and how much control will you have!

Hogwarts Legacy is another title of interest; it should be the ultimate Harry Potter gaming world if the positive speculations are fulfilled. Definitely sign me up to be a freshman student there, for sure.

Technology and advancements over recent years still makes me wonder at what are the developers’ limits in creating their games, taking into consideration the costs and complexities of making these gems. Either way, as always, there will never be a dull moment, especially with Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 at some point also. Wow indeed.
