Charlotte Church has said her ‘worst job’ as a pop star was a double-edged sword as she felt like a ‘commodity.’
The singer has recently graced our screens as runner-up in the final of The Masked Singer UK 2022 as Mushroom and, when asked about her career transition from classic music to pop stardom, said she ultimately felt like a ‘thing to be sold.’
The Welsh singer, 36, has been in the public eye since the age of 11, when she sang Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Pie Jesu down the phone live on This Morning in 1997.
In a recent Q&A with The Guardian, she explained she felt as if she had given herself away to be ‘sold’ as a cog in the music-industry machine.
When asked, ‘What is the worst job you’ve done?’ she replied, ‘It was a double-edged sword, but being a major-label artist, I felt like a commodity, a thing to be sold.’
She released her debut pop album Tissues and Issues in 2005, which reached the top five in the UK and a number of EPs followed.
The soprano singer has sold over 10 million records across the globe, releasing six studio albums so far, spanning between 1998 and 2010.
Charlotte aka Mushroom also revealed that ‘trusting some men’ would be done differently if she could edit her past, plus, she’d choose fame over anonymity and the closest she’s come to death is giving birth.
The mum-of-three also said her ‘biggest disappointment’ was the outcome of the Leveson inquiry when she testified before it in 2011.

At the time, she claimed that the persistent press intrusion she had faced for more than a decade had a massive impact on her career.
‘As an artist, I find it hard to be taken seriously because my credibility has been blown to bits,’ she said.
As well as her impressive music career, Charlotte is also known for venturing into the world of TV, hosting her eponymous series The Charlotte Church Show on Channel 4.

She also played Mrs Ogmore Pritchard in a BBC adaptation of Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, and fronted a 2018 documentary on mental health.
The chart-topper will next perform and host her Late Night Pop Dungeon at Kaleidoscope festival at Alexandra Palace in London on July 23.
