Line Of Duty: Why did Kate leave AC 12?

Things look a little different on series six of Line of Duty, with DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) having left AC-12 behind for pastures new.

After five series of nicking bent coppers in the anti-corruption unit, the new episodes see Kate working with an MIT (murder investigation team).

Fans were surprised to see one of the mainstays of the hit drama move between departments between series – and it’s still not clear exactly why Kate decided to jump ship.

There are certain clues though – and theories about the character’s true intentions.

In one scene in the first episode of series six, Kate spoke to under-suspicion DCI Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald) about the reason she left AC-12 behind.

‘I got fed up of nicking coppers,’ Kate said, explaining her decision.

DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) has been in contact with Kate in the recent series, and the pair spoke about her reason for leaving the team.

‘He knows why you moved on,’ Steve said, referencing Kate’s decision to leave after boss Ted Hastings came in for suspicion of being H in series five.

‘You’ve done your time and moved on,’ he added.

However, there are plenty of fans that believe Kate is still working undercover for AC-12 under her own name, as her new unit comes under scrutiny from anti-corruption.

While the true nature of her decision to leave AC-12 has yet to be revealed, the remaining two episodes in the series will likely give us answers.

Line Of Duty fans are concerned that the most recent episode might be pulled off air in light of Prince Philip’s death. However, the show’s official Twitter account confirmed that the show will be airing as normal at 9pm.

Star Martin also teased that the episode could be an instant classic.

‘Tomorrow’s the big one episode 4!’ he posted on social media. ‘On paper one of the best @jed_mercurio has ever written, if we deliver what was there potential to be a classic.

‘Like to give a shout out to the young team Shalom and @gregorypiper98 who give outstanding performances in the midst of the madness.’

Line Of Duty airs Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.
