Elon Musk wants to add Steam integration into Tesla cars as early as August, but he hasn’t explained how or why.

We’re not entirely sure why some people seem obsessed with the idea of playing their video games in the car. Unless you’re a kid sitting in the back during a road trip, it’s hardly the optimal location for a gaming session.

It’s something Tesla CEO Elon Musk seems to be gung-ho for, as he’s now promised Steam integration for Tesla vehicles, with a demo to arrive next month.

Tesla cars do already come with a built-in arcade, featuring select games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Cuphead, but Steam integration would allow for a far larger library.

The company is committing itself to the idea of playing games in the car despite having already got in trouble over it. Only last year, it was discovered that an option had been added that let people access games while driving.

This invited an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US, although evidentially hasn’t resulted in the game arcades being removed.

Musk hasn’t shared any other details about how Steam integration will work. For example, will users be able to purchase new games, and will some games be excluded when accessing Steam through a Tesla car?

Again, we also fail to see why this would be any more appealing than playing Steam games regularly on a PC. It doesn’t even have the portability advantage of Steam Deck.

Valve’s portable console is admittedly not freely available (you can still only make a reservation to buy one rather than simply order it), but not everyone can afford a Tesla car either.

Getting Steam games working in cars probably shouldn’t be Musk’s priority at the moment either. After making a big song and dance about buying Twitter, he’s since reneged on the deal and now faces a lawsuit over it.

Plus, his company suffered heavy financial losses recently thanks to the cryptocurrency bubble bursting.

We’re making progress with Steam integration. Demo probably next month.
