Dame Deborah James’ podcast co-host Lauren Mahon has said she still tells her things ‘in her mind’ after her death at the age of 40.

Lauren, 37, hosted You, Me and the Big C, a podcast that aimed to break the stigma surrounding cancer, with James and Rachael Bland. The trio, who were all former or current cancer patients, candidly discussed life with cancer and their treatment.

Bland died in September 2018 after being diagnosed with breast cancer. James died in June this year following her battle with bowel cancer.

Speaking about James, whose funeral took place last week, on Good Morning Britain, Lauren said it’s ‘very unique to grieve someone who’s public’.

She added that she is okay talking about James and her legacy on air but then sometimes struggles when the cameras are off.

‘It is very strange being here, last time I was here, she was watching,’ she went on.

‘So it’s very strange not being able to turn to her and be like, “Oh my god, this happened.” Or, “You’ll never guess what.” But I still tell her, in my little mind’.

‘She’s watching over you,’ Charlotte Hawkins responded.

Speaking about the NHS, Lauren also said that early diagnosis needs to be a priority, and that patients need more time with their GPs.

Lauren was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. She said she is about to undergo her fifth MRI scan and is hoping for the all-clear.

You, Me And The Big C, which began in 2018, was recently honoured at the British Podcast Awards.

Lauren accepted the award, saying: ‘I don’t think there are many podcasts that you could say would be standing up here whose co-hosts are not with them because they have died of the subject matter, but that is why we do what we do.

‘We knew it was a risk when we started it and it is something that we will continue to champion.’
