BBC One’s newest drama premiered last night to stellar reviews.
After just one episode, Marriage has been praised for its realistic, dialogue-lite depiction of, well, marriage.
The show, written and directed by Mum creator Stefan Golaszewski, stars two TV greats as married couple Ian and Emma – as they move through a difficult patch in their 27-year relationship.
You’ll no doubt recognise the actors portraying the husband and wife, but where have you seen them before? And who else is in the cast?

Who is in the cast of BBC One drama Marriage?
Sean Bean

Sheffield-born actor Sean, 63, plays Ian in Marriage.
Many will recognise him from his role as Ned Stark in HBO hit Game of Thrones (2011).
His decades-long career has also seen him portray Boromir in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy from 2001 to 2003, and star in films such as Troy (2004), The Martian (2015) and Dark River (2017).
Most recently, Sean’s TV work has been earning him acclaim, notably the BBC prison drama Time (2021) alongside Stephen Graham, and US TV series Snowpiercer (2021).
Nicola Walker

Nicola, 52, plays Emma in Marriage – married to Sean Bean’s character Ian.
In real life, the London-born actor is best known for her decades of TV work, mainly in the UK.
She played Ruth Evershed in Spooks (2003 to 2011), and starred as DCI Cassie Newton in four seasons of Unforgotten (2015 to 2021). Nicola also appeared in Last Tango In Halifax (2012 to 2016), reprising her role as Gillian for a fifth series in 2020.
Most recently, Nicola has been at the helm of The Split (2018 to 2021) – and is the titular character of PBS/Alibi police drama Annika, which will return for a second series.
Chantelle Alle

Relative newcomer Chantelle Alle plays Jessica, Ian and Emma’s daughter, in Marriage.
She appeared in a 2020 episode of ITV’s Vera, as Sahar in US sitcom We Are Lady Parts (2021), and Abi in BBC Three miniseries Mood (2022).
Upcoming Apple TV Plus series Hijack, starring Idris Elba, is her next project.
James Bolam

Sunderland actor James, 87, appears in the first episode of Marriage as Emma’s dad Gerry.
He’s been collecting acting credits since 1960, and is notable for his role as Terry Collier in iconic TV sitcom The Likely Lads (1964 to 1966) and its 1973 follow-up.
James is also known for starring as Jack Halford in New Tricks (2003 to 2013), and as the titular Grandpa in Cbeebies kids’ comedy Grandpa In My Pocket (2009 to 2014).
Henry Lloyd-Hughes

Emma’s boss, Jamie, is played by 37-year-old actor Henry Lloyd-Hughes.
He played Mark Donovan in The Inbetweeners (2008 to 2010), and has also starred in Anna Karenina (2012), Killing Eve (2019) and The English Game (2020).
In 2021, he played Sherlock in Netflix miniseries The Irregulars and DS Nathan Rose in AMC’s Ragdoll.
Extremely eagle-eyed Potterheads might remember him as Ravenclaw’s Quidditch captain Roger Davies, from Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire (2005).
According to IMDB, Marriage also features Jack Holden as Adam (Jessica’s boyfriend), Kath Hughes as Claire, Miles Barrow as Mark, and Christopher Pizzey as Eric.
