Piers Morgan has encouraged Elon Musk to avoid buying Manchester United after the tech billionaire jokingly announced his plans to purchase the team.

The Tesla entrepreneur quickly went viral on Tuesday after he posted a statement revealing his intentions to acquire the club, however he soon clarified that he was only having a laugh.

Writing to his 103million followers, Musk initially penned: ‘To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party!’

He then added: ‘Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.’

The post garnered a lot of attention, receiving almost 40,000 retweets and over 200,000 likes within a couple of hours.

Morgan was among those who responded to Musk’s proposal and urged the billionaire to steer clear of Manchester United, given the struggling Premier League club’s current troubles.

‘Trust me on this, Elon – you don’t want to go anywhere near them…,’ he penned. ‘If you want to buy a football team, try @Arsenal.’

However, Musk later clarified his post and stressed that he’s not buying any sports team.

‘No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter,’ he said when asked whether he was serious about purchasing the club.

‘I’m not buying any sports teams.

‘Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid.’

Musk added: ‘And I’m not buying Coca-Cola to put the cocaine back in, despite the extreme popularity of such a move.

‘Standup is my side-hustle.’
