Robert De Niro will reportedly star opposite himself in a new gangster movie as two crime bosses.

The 78-year-old Hollywood veteran is set to lead the upcoming Warner Bros drama, which will be directed by Barry Levinson who has been behind Oscar-winning films such as Rain Man and Wag The Dog.

De Niro will play both Vito Genovese and Frank Costello in the film that will follow the two Italian American crime bosses who were at the head of their respective families in the 20th century.

In 1957, Genovese had an attempted plot to assassinate Costello, who was injured in the attack and tried to retire from the mafia.

Wise Guys will also serve as a reunion for De Niro and Levinson, who have collaborated in the past on the likes of The Wizard of Lies, What Just Happened, Sleeper, and Wag the Dog.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Pileggi – who co-wrote Martin Scorsese’s classic Goodfellas, which featured De Niro – will pen the screenplay for the new film, and Irwin Winkler will serve as producer.

Goodfellas itself was based on Pileggi’s 1985 book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family, although the book and Wise Guys the movie are unrelated.

This is not the first time a Hollywood star has been their own co-star.

Tom Hardy played both Reggie and Ronnie Kray in the 2015 crime biopic Legend which told the story of the London gangster duo.

In the 1989 classic Back To The Future Part II, Michael J. Fox appeared on screen as both Marty Mcfly, as well as Marlene Mcfly.

Mike Myers also took on two roles during his time in the Austin Powers franchise, appearing as the titular character as well as antagonist Dr Evil.

By the third film, he also played Fat Bastard and Dutch supervillain Goldmember.

Warwick Davies took on three roles in the Harry Potter universe, appearing as Gringotts Head Goblin, Professor Flitwick, and also the voice of Griphook.

Eddie Murphy is no stranger to being his own co-star, starring as Prince Akeem, Clarence, Randy Watson, and Saul In Coming To America.

In the 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor, he took on not one, not two, but seven roles onscreen.
