Kelly Macdonald hasn’t ruled out the possibility of returning to Line of Duty if audiences are finally blessed with that longed-for seventh season.

Regular actors Adrian Dunbar, Martin Compston and Vicky McClure are all on the record as having said they’d be up one last outing for the AC-12 gang, following the series’ incredible success over the years – as well as a rather divisive season six finale, which finally unveiled the identity of bent police officer H.

Macdonald was a major part of the last season as DCI Jo Davidson, who is put on the murder investigation team on Operation Lighthouse alongside McClure’s Kate Fleming, with the pair enjoying notable chemistry.

She is then later revealed to have been coerced into the police service to act as a go-between for the Organised Crime Group (OCG), as the daughter and niece of Tommy Hunter, and is eventually relocated under the witness protection programme after being freed from prison.

Now, talking to Metro.co.uk ahead of the release of new Netflix thriller I Came By, the actress was happy to entertain a possible return.

‘Well, she’s not dead, is she? Anything can happen.’

She then added: ‘I have no idea. But, you never know. You never know what’s around the corner.’

Dunbar most recently revealed that there had been talks for a possible film version for Line of Duty, if it returns.

‘I’m not sure what shape it’ll take… somebody was talking about possibly a film or maybe you know two 90 minutes or three episodes,’ he told the PA news agency.

‘I’m not sure you’d get a full series. But I think there’s still an audience out there to see the three of us back together again.’

… But rumours persist after talks have been confirmed, with fans eager to see the return of Fleming, Adrian Dunbar as Ted Hastings and Martin Compston as Steve Arnott (Picture: BBC)

‘I think we’ll hear something shortly about it. I’ve got a feeling that before September is out, we might hear something about Line of Duty that we can tell people,’ the actor speculated.

Meanwhile, Macdonald’s latest release sees her star alongside Hugh Bonneville, George MacKay and Percelle Ascott as the frazzled mother of one of two graffiti artists who target the homes of the elite.

However, when they come into the orbit of retired High Court judge Sir Hector Blake (Bonneville), a dark secret is uncovered that leads them on a shocking and dangerous journey.

The Emmy winner revealed that she was drawn to I Came By as she hadn’t ‘done a thriller before’.

‘The thriller aspect was a first for me,’ she said. ‘There are certain scenes that I’ve seen various versions of in films that I find quite hard to watch – I’m not good with scary films or horrors, and it was just really fun getting to play our version of that, like me creeping around the house getting frightened by my own reflection!’

I Came By will be in select UK cinemas on August 19 and on Netflix from August 31.
