A release date for the Lightfall expansion, a Fortnite crossover, and a whole lot more were revealed in the recent Destiny 2 showcase.
Gamescom Opening Night Live had a brief new cinematic trailer for Destiny 2 among its announcements, but on the same night Bungie also had its own dedicated livestream for the game.
You can watch the whole thing yourself on YouTube, but it’s about three hours long so allow us to sum up all the major announcements, starting with the release date for Destiny 2’s next expansion, Lightfall.
We all knew that Lightfall would release at some point next year, but fans won’t need to wait too long as it’s launching on February 28, 2023. As a quick reminder, Lightfall will be the penultimate chapter for the game’s Light And Darkness Saga.
The expansion will introduce a new cyberpunk looking city on the planet Neptune and a new character subclass called Strand.
It comes with a neat grappling hook that lets you swing about like you’re Spider-Man, and it doesn’t even need to connect to anything since it’s magic, allowing you to swing wherever you want.
The other big news of the showcase was that Bungie will no longer be sunsetting Destiny 2’s expansions. In the past, Bungie removed content from prior expansions to avoid bloating the game.
Unsurprisingly, this has never been popular with the community, so Bungie has decided to end sunsetting and leave everything as is. This means everything from the Shadowkeep expansion onwards won’t be going anywhere.
‘We’ve also been working on the Destiny engine behind the scenes, preparing our technology and our game to last for many, many years to come. Because Destiny 2 is not going anywhere, and neither are your expansions,’ said general manager Justin Truman.
‘We want this story, since we first communed with the Darkness on the Moon, to be fully playable start to finish, and we’re happy to announce today that we are not planning to sunset any more expansions.
‘We want the Destiny universe to grow, and we’re gonna continue to do everything that we can behind the scenes to keep that possible within our game engine.’
There’s no mention, however, of whether this means Bungie plans on adding the content it already removed back into the game. Namely, the original content from when Destiny 2 first launched and the Forsaken story campaign, which Bungie took out only last year.

Lastly, Destiny 2 is now available to download via the Epic Games Store and newcomers can get the game’s 30th Anniversary Pack for free (Bungie turned 30 last May).
As a result, all players will be able to access all the story campaigns – Shadowfall, Beyond Light, and The Witch Queen – for free, across all platforms, until August 30.
Bungie also officially revealed the leaked Fortnite armour sets for Destiny 2, but the collaboration doesn’t end there. As it turns out, Destiny 2 skins are also coming to Fortnite, as well as Fall Guys.
You can find a full breakdown of the Destiny 2 showcase on Bungie’s website.
Destiny 2 is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Stadia.
