Sounds like it’s still fairly early in production though (pic: 2K)

Netflix has announced who will be directing and writing the BioShock movie, but don’t expect it for another couple of years at least.

Earlier this year, Netflix announced its plans for a BioShock cinematic universe, starting with a movie that, at the time, didn’t even have a director or writer attached to it yet.

Since then, Netflix has managed to fill in both positions, confirming that Francis Lawrence will be in the director’s chair, with Michael Green penning the script.

If you’re unfamiliar with either name, you’ll definitely recognise their previous work. Netflix’s announcement specifically credits Lawrence as the director of 2007’s I Am Legend (which is getting a sequel for some reason) and all the Hunger Games movies, barring the first one.

Lawrence was likely picked since he’s already working with Netflix on another movie called Slumberland, which is releasing this year and is based on the Little Nemo In Slumberland comic strip.

Netflix also thinks he’s perfect for the job given his experience with directing dystopian movies. We’re not so convinced given the quality of his previous work.

We have a lot more faith in Green as the script writer, since he co-wrote the screenplays for Blade Runner 2049 and Logan. He was also the sole writer (you know, other than Agatha Christie) for Kenneth Branagh’s Murder On The Orient Express and its 2022 sequel.

Green signed a multi-project deal with Netflix back in 2020 for his own TV series, Blue Eye Samurai, but that doesn’t have a release date yet.

There’s no indication that original game director Ken Levine is involved though, despite him also being a movie script writer (at one point he was working on a reboot of Logan’s Run). He was certainly attached to previous attempts to make a BioShock movie, but apparently not this one.

Netflix has yet to confirm any actors for the BioShock movie, but its announcement at suggests that it will primarily be based on the original 2007 game, adding that Lawrence will ‘brave the flooded corridors of Rapture soon enough.’

If the lack of actors wasn’t enough of a giveaway, the movie is clearly still in the early stages of production, especially since its director is busy with another Hunger Games movie at the moment (based on the prequel book).

The prequel film isn’t coming out until November 17, 2023, so maybe don’t expect the BioShock movie until 2024 at the earliest.

There’s no telling if we’ll have a new BioShock game by that point, but it is a possibility. While a new entry was confirmed by publisher 2K, no trailer or official details have been shared since, despite leaks suggesting that it is set in Antarctica.
